Who the pack rushes (original title: The Last Run ) is an American thriller by Richard Fleischer from 1971 . It was filmed in Malaga and other locations in Spain .

action

Harry Garmes, son of an American and a Portuguese woman, is an American professional criminal who settled in Albufeira , a fishing village in Portugal , after working as a getaway driver in Chicago . He owns a brown 1956 BMW 503 and lives with the prostitute Monique. After nine years he unexpectedly gets a new assignment, namely to bring the killer Paul Rickard and his girlfriend Claudie Scherrer to France via Spain . Harry's attraction to this mission is not so much the money as the adventure.

During the drive, Harry's car is followed by the police, but he can get rid of them skillfully. When the three of them spend the night in the hotel, Harry wants to find out more about Paul and his coup. Harry learns, however, that Paul is expected by accomplices in France who will follow Harry's BMW in a black Citroën with the right turn signal turned on and turn off the turn signal when they reach the destination. Harry also develops sympathies for Claudie. After crossing the border the next day and meeting Paul's accomplices, it turns out that they have lured Paul and Claudie into a trap. Harry succeeds in overpowering the crooks and he goes back to Portugal with Paul and Claudie, where he wants to entrust the two of them to the fisherman Miguel, who can bring them to North Africa .

In Spain they are followed by two vehicles, a white Jaguar and a black Dodge - Barreiros . Since Harry has installed a lever in his BMW with which he can accelerate faster, he manages to get rid of the driver of the Jaguar during the chase , who severely damaged his vehicle in the pursuit and ultimately crashes down a slope. However, due to the heavy use of the engine, Harry's car makes unusual noises that force him to stop and check the engine. Harry inspects the engine while Claudie sits at the wheel and steps on the accelerator with the handbrake on. Meanwhile, Paul is standing on the side of the road with a Schmiere pistol. The black Dodge Barreiros drives past the rest area, turns and races towards Paul. This succeeds in killing the driver of the Dodge Barreiro with one shot from his pistol, with the car crashing into a rock. Then Harry overpowers the passenger, lays the body in the Dodge Barreiros to make the incident look like an accident and detonates the wreckage with a fuse that he inserts into the tank of the car, whereupon it explodes. After that, the three of them drive on until Harry pauses to take a nap under a tree. Meanwhile, Paul and Claudie are resting on the back seat of the BMW, where Paul confesses to her that she is just a means to an end for him. Shortly after Harry wakes up again, Claudie comes to him. He gives her the opportunity to change her escape plan in order to go to the USA with him and let Paul escape to North Africa alone. Then Harry and Claudie kiss.

The three of them arrive in Albufeira at night, Harry stops at a phone booth and asks Claudie and Paul to wait for him in the adjacent bar while he is on the phone. In the pub, Paul watches a film noir on TV while Claudie sleeps. When Harry comes in and asks him to come with him, Paul says that he would still like to see the film to the end and that the danger is always in the phone booth. Then the three drive to the cemetery. There Claudie tells Harry that she will not follow his plan and will stay with Paul. Harry makes his way to Monique's apartment, is attacked by gangsters and escapes on foot from the apartment. Paul and Claudie hear the gunshots and want to drive to Harry's house. In the narrow, steep streets of Albufeira, however, the car is damaged and finally comes to a standstill lying on its side, unfit to drive. They run to the beach, where they find the fisherman Miguel, who was supposed to bring them to North Africa, killed. Harry also comes to the beach, but, hit by shots from the background, collapses in front of Claudie's eyes and dies. Paul urges Claudie to board a boat with him, which she then does.

criticism

  • The lexicon of international films writes: “A technically solidly staged gangster film, less exciting than melodramatic. All in all too superficial and on top of that with rather questionable sympathy. "
  • Roger Ebert gives the film two out of four stars and notes that in some places the film “almost seems to understand what gangster films are about”. However, he regrets the departure of John Huston as director, who was replaced by Richard Fleischer after a dispute with George C. Scott , as a loss of quality for the film.
  • Toni Mastroianni of Cleveland Press writes: “Scott's problem right now is finding a movie as big as he is. The role is right for him and maybe he should be in a real Hemingway rather than an imitation of one. "
  • Roger Greenspun of the New York Times sums it up: “[Fleischer] is a veteran with over 20 years of experience in the industry ... He still doesn't seem to have mastered the reaction shot and see his car chase scenes despite all the clouds of dust and screeching tires as if they were happening at 30 mph. "
