The Partridge Family (original title The Partridge Family ) is an American television series about a widowed mother and her five children, who appeared as a pop group in addition to their typical suburban family life and toured the United States in a converted school bus . The sitcom was broadcast in the United States from September 25, 1970 to September 7, 1974 by the television station ABC and received many reruns. Between 1972 and 1976, ARD broadcast 43 German-language episodes.

content

The main actors were Shirley Jones as mother Shirley Partridge and David Cassidy as son Keith Partridge (16). Susan Dey played the daughter Laurie (15), Danny Bonaduce played the son Danny (10), Jeremy Gelbwaks (later replaced by Brian Forster ) was the son Christopher (7) and Suzanne Crough played the daughter Tracy (5). Dave Madden was the band's manager, Reuben Kincaid, who organized the tour bookings. The story was inspired by the real-life family band The Cowsills . The sitcom was produced by Screen Gems , a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures , which had already produced The Monkees series , which was also about a fictional music group.

music

As with the Monkees , whose member Davy Jones had a guest appearance in an episode, albums with the music of the sitcom pop group were released parallel to the series . Although only David Cassidy accompanied by Shirley Jones sang on the albums and none of the television actors played an instrument themselves, the records were bought over 25 million times and the Partridge Family became a phenomenon.

The Partridge Family's greatest hit, the 1970 song I Think I Love You (author: Tony Romeo ), peaked at number one on the US charts . The following album rose to number four on the Billboard 200 . For lead singer David Cassidy, the sales success started his own career as a teen idol. The second single, Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted , was another million seller. Also I'll Meet You Halfway , I Woke Up in Love This Morning and It's One of Those Nights (yes Love) reached yet good chart positions in the US Top Twenty. From 1972, after the publication of Neil Sedaka- - cover songs Breaking Up Is Hard to Do , The Partridge Family, was also due to ongoing parallel by Cassidy's solo career in the UK more successful than in the US.

The sitcom was produced over four years. After 96 episodes and ten albums, the series was canceled due to ailing viewer ratings.

marketing

Merchandise and fan articles were also sold for the first time in the music business under the brand name Partridge Family. There were partridge games, toy guitars, lunch boxes, bath towels, children's clothes, books, and a fan magazine. Screen Gems collected around $ 500 million in license fees for this. The Partridge Family also advertised cornflakes and housewares.

Germany

In Germany between 1972 and 1976 43 episodes of the series were broadcast under the name Die Partridge Familie by ARD. The dubbed version took first place in the 1973 Bravo annual charts as the most popular early evening series. Leading actor David Cassidy took first and third place in the 1973 Bravo annual charts and received the Bravo Otto as the most popular singer of the year.

successor

From September 1974 to March 1975, the Partridges experienced a brief resurrection as an animated series in the Saturday morning program of the US TV station CBS . In Partridge Family 2200 AD (German: The Partridge Family in 2200 ) of the production company Hanna-Barbera , the family was moved into the future. There were many new characters in it, like Veenie, a Martian friend of Keith, Marion, a friend of Laurie, or Orbit, a robot dog that belonged to Danny. In a re-performance on the Fred Flintstone & Friends show , the animated series was performed under the title The Partridge Family in Outer Space (Eng. The Partridge Family in Space ).

In 2003, the US cable broadcaster VH1 announced that it would produce an updated version of the Partridge Family. In 2004, the station broadcast the casting show In Search of the Partridge Family (Eng. In search of the Partridge family ). The audience was asked to choose the actors for the new episodes. After the new family in October 2004 it was clear a pilot under the name was The New Partridge Family (dt. The new Partridge Family ) was prepared and sent in January 2005 to VH first Immediately afterwards the series was canceled. There were no further consequences.
