action

The action of the third season begins several months after the escape from the farm. At this point Lori is already heavily pregnant and the group is finding it more and more difficult to find permanent, safe accommodation for themselves and the soon-to-be children. They pass a prison , populated by strays, but largely undamaged in its function , and see it as their chance of safe refuge. During the evacuation of the prison, Hershel is bitten by a walker and Rick immediately amputates his affected lower leg to prevent Hershel from turning into a walker. In addition, the group finds some surviving prisoners with whom fatal conflicts soon arise. The other two inmates, Axel and Oscar, manage to gain Rick's trust after a few initial difficulties and they are accepted into the group. T-Dog is bitten during a stray invasion in prison and later sacrifices himself to more walkers to save Carol. Lori dies giving birth to her daughter Judith and is saved from metamorphosis by Carl with a shot in the head. After the prison is safe again, Rick learns of Lori's death and temporarily falls into a depression . He isolates himself from the group for days and shows symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder , which is why he is no longer able to lead the group at times.

Meanwhile, the viewer learns that Andrea has now teamed up with the swordsman Michonne. The women are picked up by several armed men and taken to a town, Woodbury, which has been secured by blockades. This is ruled by a charismatic leader who calls himself the governor. Michonne immediately suspects that something is wrong with him, while Andrea is completely taken with the governor and Woodbury. Since Andrea repeatedly refuses to come with her, Michonne leaves the city on her own. She is then pursued by a group led by Merle (Daryl's brother missing since season one) and shot in combat. A little later, Merle ambushes Glenn and Maggie, who are currently on the prowl, and takes them both prisoner. Michonne observes the scene, takes the baby food procured for Judith to the prison and is let inside. After telling Rick about Glenn and Maggie's abduction, she takes him, Daryl, and Oscar to Woodbury. They manage to free Maggie and Glenn, who were tortured and forced to tell the governor about the prison. Meanwhile, in the governor's house, Michonne makes some gruesome discoveries that further reveal his true character. In a fight, Michonne stabs the governor's eye with a shard of glass. Despite the revelations, Andrea continues to stand by the governor, who has now made the plan to take over the prison. Andrea insists on a peaceful solution, for which he is secretly not ready. He incites the people of Woodbury by making false claims against Rick's group and arming them to attack the prison.

Merle is kicked out by the governor, but not accepted by Rick's group. When the governor pretends to leave Rick in jail if he delivers Michonne to him, Merle rightly assumes that Rick will not be able to do so. He then kidnaps Michonne to bring her to Woodbury himself. On the way she successfully speaks to his conscience and is released. After a failed assassination attempt on the governor, Merle is shot by him. Daryl finds his mutated brother a little later and releases him from his condition. In order to defend themselves from the governor's army, Rick's group urgently needs new weapons and ammunition. Rick finds it in his hometown, where he meets Morgan again, who seems to have gone mad . Coincidentally, Morgan has hoarded a sizeable arsenal of weapons and is leaving a large part of it to Rick. Meanwhile Andrea tries to flee Woodbury, is stopped by the governor and taken to a torture chamber that was originally intended for Michonne. He wounds his closest confidante Milton, who betrayed him, badly and locks the dying man with the tied Andrea inside. As a result, she is attacked and bitten by the undead Milton. Rick's group can repel the district governor's army, in part because many of them stop fighting on their own and withdraw against the governor's orders. Out of anger about this, he turns his weapon on them and searches for the run with his few remaining allies. The only survivor of the massacre , Karen, then leads Rick's group to Woodbury. Andrea is found and (due to the infectious bite) shoots himself with a gun in Michonne's presence. Rick invites all the remaining residents of Woodbury to join him and move into prison.

The group, led by Rick, has been looking for a new place to stay for several months. Rick's wife Lori is already heavily pregnant and is expecting her child any minute. After the group is initially driven out of an abandoned house by a horde of walkers, Rick and Daryl accidentally find an abandoned prison complex while hunting. The group decides to enter the fenced forecourt, lock the gate behind them and kill all walkers located there. While everyone recovers from their exertions over a nightly campfire, Rick gives them a speech: he congratulates them on their victory, but also admonishes them to continue the plan the next morning. Rick suspects the prison was overrun early and there may be supplies of equipment and supplies in the prison.

With teamwork and back to back, the group manages to free the wider forecourt of walkers. They notice that civilians are also among the walkers, which could indicate a threat to security. First, a cell block is secured within the building for the night, then Rick, Daryl, Hershel, Glenn, T-Dog and Maggie begin an exploration mission to other prison areas. In the dark corridors they are surprised and separated by a group of walkers, whereupon Hershel gets too close to a seated walker and is bitten in the leg while trying to find the missing Glenn and Maggie. Rick tries to save his life and cuts off the injured leg with an ax, hoping to avert infection. When Hershel passes out from the pain and blood loss, Daryl discovers that they are not alone in prison and that they are being watched by a group of surviving prisoners.

Hershel is returned to Cell Block C and placed on a bed. The five prisoners, who were locked in the canteen by a guard when the epidemic reached the prison ten months earlier and were able to survive there thanks to the large supplies and safe from walkers, follow the survivors. Rick and Daryl explain to them that the world has changed. They lead the former prisoners outside and show them the hunted undead. Tomas, the leader of the group, complains about cell block C, in which he and others of the group lived, which Rick firmly refuses. Rick demands half of the canteen supplies in exchange for help in cleaning up another cell block where the prison group could live. The group has no choice but to consent. Rick assigns Glenn to supervise Hershel and goes to the neighboring cell block with T-Dog, Daryl and the prisoners who are being equipped with melee weapons.

Carol tries everything to stabilize Hershel. Maggie is worried he might not make it. Glenn calms her down and, on Rick's instructions, has to tie Hershel to the bed for her own safety. Carl can find some bandages, which is very helpful, but he is reprimanded by his mother for going solo to the infirmary. After Hershel is stable, Carol wants to gain more practical experience with cesarean delivery on corpses and asks Glenn to work with her to find a suitable bit for it. Outside on the fence, she finds and kills one of the walkers, and with Glenn's help, she gets him inside. During the operation on the corpse, she is observed by an unknown person. Maggie wants her father to die in peace when suddenly his breathing stops. However, Lori immediately begins a resuscitation and succeeds.

Rick and the others clean cell block D. One of the prisoners is scratched on the upper body by a walker, and when Rick explains that he cannot be rescued like Hershel, Tomas brutally kills him with a hook. While Tomas, contrary to Rick's instructions, provokes a fight with a larger group of walkers than necessary, he swings his ax backwards in Rick's direction and then throws one of the attacking walkers at him. Rick escapes the dangerous situations and confronts Tomas after the fight. After an elusive answer, Rick splits his skull in two with his machete. The prisoner Andrew then attacks Rick and is followed by him into a courtyard with walkers. Rick locks the door behind the pleading Andrew. The cell block is handed over to the remaining inmates, Axel and Oscar. Back in Cell Block C, Rick visits the wounded Hershel. He comes to consciousness and takes Rick's hand. Lori and Rick, separate from the group. After months, Rick takes a tentative step towards Lori again.

The episode is about Andrea and Michonne. After following the crash of a military helicopter, the two set off for the crash site. Shortly after them the vehicles of a group of armed men arrive, including Merle, who discovers the two hidden women and takes them prisoner. They are taken to Woodbury with a pilot who is still alive. In this bite-free city there is a school, enough food, electricity and warm water. It is ruled by a man who is called "Governor" by the others but who keeps his real name a secret. While Andrea sympathizes with the governor, Michonne remains suspicious. The governor asks the injured helicopter pilot about his latest experiences and learns that he and other Army survivors have set up a camp near the city. He leaves the pilot in the belief that he wants to save his people and bring them to the city. Instead, he and five henchmen raid the camp of these soldiers and shoot them all. The group takes their weapons, supplies and medicines with them and the governor reports to the remaining 67 residents that the soldiers were already dead before he arrived. The last scene shows the governor looking at a collection of severed biters' heads in aquariums, including the pilot's head.

In the opening sequence, someone with an ax breaks a chain securing a gate to the prison and uses parts of a doe as bait to lay a trail in it. The prisoners Axel and Oscar ask to join the group and to be allowed to leave their unsavory cell block, but this is only advocated by T-Dog. Rick considers this to be too dangerous for the group. Thereupon the two let themselves be locked up in a prison yard with provisions for a week by Rick. When Hershel makes the first attempts to walk in the prison yard in the presence of the women, Carls and T-Dogs, they are surprised by a horde of walkers, and the prison sirens sound, attracting more walkers. Rick, Daryl, and Glenn set up walkers burning on the outer fence, and it takes minutes to get to the yard. T-Dog can lock the opened gate again, but is bitten. He flees inside with Carol, as well as Hershel with Beth and Maggie with Carl and Lori. Lori's labor pains, she cannot give birth naturally and the two women perform a caesarean section in a boiler room knowing that Lori will bleed to death afterwards. Carl prevents her transformation with a shot in her head. In a hopeless situation, T-Dog clutches two walkers and gives Carol the opportunity to escape. Oscar leads Rick and Daryl to the generator room, where the sirens can be turned off. Andrew lurks there with his ax and attacks Rick, while Daryl is busy holding the door shut to prevent walkers wanting in. Rick loses his revolver, which Oscar picks up. Andrew persuades Oscar to shoot Rick, but Oscar shoots Andrew and gives Rick the revolver back. On the way back, the three T-Dogs find a body.

In Woodbury, Andrea Merle shows the location of Hershel's farm on a map, where she and her former group around Rick had stayed, so that he can start looking for his brother Daryl there. Andrea wants to stay in Woodbury for the time being because she feels safe and secure there. This meets with incomprehension among Michonne, who does not trust the governor.

Rick is in a trance from the shock of his wife's death and goes back into the building alone, armed with an ax, to find Lori. Meanwhile, Daryl and Maggie make their way to a former kindergarten to look for food and clothes for the newborn baby. In Woodbury you can see the district governor still treating his daughter, who has become a bitter, as if she were a normal person: he combs her hair but has to keep her tied up. When a party later takes place in Woodbury, Michonne takes the opportunity and sneaks into the governor's house, where she retrieves her gun and looks at documents. She later ends up in a hidden part of Woodbury, where she finds a small group of caged walkers who are freed and killed by her. Meanwhile, Glenn goes in search of Rick, who is still looking for Lori in prison. When he has found it, he does not manage to have a calming effect on him. Rick goes on alone, comes across the room where Lori died a little later and finds a lazy, eaten Walker there - Lori's corpse seems to have been eaten by the Walker. Rick shoots him in the head, then desperately stabs the walker's belly. The district governor confronts Michonne about the walkers killed, but wants to give her another chance if she works on his team. Michonne doesn't get involved and wants to leave the city with Andrea at night. However, the governor has informed them about the incident and is still of the opinion that they are better off in Woodbury than outside the city. When the gate opens, Andrea cannot make up her mind to follow Michonne, so she leaves the city alone. Later that evening, the Woodbury festival culminates with Merle and other men holding a gladiatorial match of sorts in a ring formed by chained walkers. Andrea is shocked by this behavior, but the fight is normal entertainment for the rest of the residents. Three graves are dug in the prison yard, one for T-Dog, Lori and apparently one for Carol, who has not been seen since the walkers attacked T-Dog. Rick is sitting exhausted and exhausted next to the dead Walker when suddenly a phone rings in the same room ...

Michonne is followed by Merle and three other men from Woodbury Ward. She can kill two of them from a hiding place, but is shot in the leg by Merle. Later she attacks Merle and his companion again, at the same time the three have to defend themselves against incoming walkers. A sword blow from Michonne, who is lying on the ground, slashes the stomach of a walker, whose entrails spill on her. Michonne flees, Merle and his young companion can defend themselves against the walkers, but the latter is killed by Merle, because he does not want to pretend to the governor that Michonne is dead. On his way back to Woodbury, Merle meets Maggie and Glenn in front of a market, who have found baby food there. He brings the two into his power and forces them to drive with him to Woodbury. Michonne observes the meeting and recognizes the two from Andreas' stories. She has also found that the biter's body content on her body means that she is no longer perceived as prey by other walkers. Andrea feels drawn to the governor and enters into a love affair with him. Meanwhile, Rick receives several calls. In the further course, it turns out that he only imagined the phone calls. Daryl, Carl, and Oscar look for Carol in prison. After a long time Daryl finds her visibly taken away in a cell and brings her back to the cleaned cell block. At the end of the episode, Rick sees a battered, blood-covered woman who moves through the walkers to the fence without being attacked - it's Michonne with the baby food that was left on the market.

In a forest, the group is attacked by a horde of walkers. They flee to a log cabin. There they meet a survivor who was able to survive in the hut up to this point. To distract the hungry pack of walkers, they throw the corpse in front of the door and can escape through the back door. Five survivors, led by Tyreese and his sister Sasha, flee from walkers over a destroyed rear wall into the unsafe part of the prison - the second woman in the group, Donna, has a large bite wound. Carl follows shouting, finds the five struggling with walkers near the gym and leads them to the safe block, but locks them in a cell for their own safety. Tyreese explains to Carl that he knows how to deal with Donna.

In Woodbury, Rick, Daryl, Michonne and Oscar use a smoke grenade to free Glenn and Maggie just before they are executed. During the firefight during the retreat under smoke that is also generated, Rick has a vision of Shane, during which Oscar is shot. Michonne waits for him in the governor's apartment and discovers the bite-head collection and his chained daughter, a mutated girl. The incoming governor begs Michonne not to harm his daughter (it is later learned that the governor, like Hershel once did, hoped that there was a way to humanize walkers again). Michonne, however, pierces their head with her katana. The governor pounces on Michonne and she appears to succumb before reaching for a shard from one of the broken aquariums and ramming it in the governor's eye. Before she can kill him with the sword, Andrea appears and stops her with drawn weapon. Outside Woodbury, people gather around Rick, but Daryl does not come to the meeting point - Rick expresses reservations about Michonne, who did not act with the group during the retreat. The governor, who had to learn very painfully that Merle had lied to him about Michonne's death, names him in front of the assembled city population as the culprit who led the attackers into the city. The captured Daryl is dragged into the arena in which he now faces Merle.

She does not manage to be reintegrated into the group because she also falls out with Michonne. Carol tells Andrea to offer the governor the night of his life and kill him in the process. Andrea receives a vehicle and drives back to Woodbury. There she meets again with the governor and goes to bed with him. Both groups appear prepared for an attack. Beth sings a song. Meanwhile, Andrea leaves the sleeping governor's bed and takes her knife in her hand, but cannot bring herself to kill him.

Rick goes to an old warehouse with Daryl and Hershel, where he meets with the governor. In an initial conversation, Rick tells the governor about the attack and kidnapping of Glenn and Maggie, which the governor claims is Merle's sole responsibility. Shortly afterwards, Andrea, Martinez and Milton also arrive there. It becomes clear that Andrea organized this meeting. She goes into the shed and presents a map to mark separate areas for both parties. The district governor rejects the proposal with an arrogant laugh and demands that the group surrender. In the further conversation Andrea is sent from the camp by the governor. Outside, the companions of the two groups sit down together and it becomes clear that there are more pragmatic interests and a friendlier atmosphere here. When walkers suddenly appear, the two groups fight them together: Daryl finds something in common with Martinez. In the warehouse, the conversation continues until the governor comes up with his demand and an ultimatum: he wants Michonne to be extradited and a decision on this within two days. Back in Woodbury, he orders everyone in the other group except Michonne to be shot immediately. Milton is appalled as the governor thanks Andrea for mediating. Andrea makes a naive impression here. In jail, Rick reports to the group that the governor wants the jail and them dead. He says they are about to start a war. Later he tells Hershel about the ultimatum and the demanded extradition of Michonne.

The episode begins with a look back at the time when Michonne and Andrea were still traveling alone. Andrea wants to know more from Michonne about the two walkers she is carrying, but Michonne does not want to comment on them. At Woodbury, Martinez equips vehicles with weapons while the governor sets up a torture chamber for Michonne. Here he is observed by Milton, who confronts him. Milton realizes what is going to happen, warns Andrea and shows her the torture chamber. When the governor shows up, Andrea tries to shoot him from an ambush, but is prevented from doing so by Milton. He advises her to go to jail. When Andrea wants to leave, Martinez disarms her, like everyone else. She goes to the wall on which Tyreese and Sasha are keeping watch. She can convince the two of them to let her go. The district governor confronts Milton as to whether he knew about Andrea's escape and what else Andrea said. Tyreese then has to drive with Martinez to the biter trap, where Walkers are caught in pits. It turns out that these are intended for the raid on the prison. Again there is a dispute between Tyreese and some of his companions. Meanwhile, the governor himself goes hunting for Andrea in an off-road vehicle and drives her to an old factory. He follows her into the building, where he looks for her in the pale light. As the governor slowly approaches, Andrea is able to save herself by opening the door to a corridor populated by walkers, looking for protection behind it and then closing it from the other side. While the governor has to defend himself against the walkers, she can escape from the factory into the night. You can see someone pouring gasoline over the walkers and into the trailers and then setting everything on fire. In the morning Andrea arrives at the prison, but is overwhelmed by the governor, who has followed her there. When he gets back to Woodbury, he says that he couldn't find Andrea. Without addressing the burned walkers, he asks Tyreese a question to find out if he set fire to the walkers. This reacts irritated. The district governor then meets Milton, whose nervous demeanor suggests he started the fire. The episode ends with a tracking shot through a corridor to the torture chamber, where Andrea is gagged and tied up on a medical treatment chair.

Rick, Daryl and Hershel discuss how to proceed. It seems like Rick decided to extradite Michonne. Merle is now increasingly driven insane due to withdrawal symptoms; Nevertheless, Rick tries to win him over to his plans. In the courtyard, the others are trying to regain some terrain and clear it of walkers. Daryl later tries to get Glenn to forgive Merle. This refuses. Daryl meets again with Merle, who is still looking for drugs and at the same time preparing the kidnapping of Michonne. It becomes clear how great the distance has become between the brothers. Merle lures Michonne - allegedly to clean up - into an area with walkers, then knocks them down and ties them up. He later drives her outside of the prison and short circuits a car. There is another fight with a large number of walkers. In jail, Rick and Daryl search for Merle and Michonne and discover that Merle kidnapped them. Daryl picks up the trail. Meanwhile, Glenn talks to Hershel and asks him for his blessing as he wants to ask for Maggie's hand. Later he cuts the ring from a female walker and gives it to her, who accepts his proposal. On the drive to Woodbury, Michonne succeeds in getting Merle to release her. He gives her the sword back and leaves her on the street. When he is attacked by a walker himself, the governor's people discover him, beat up Merle and the governor shoots him. In prison, Rick gives a speech with which he justifies his decision to extradite Michonne and at the same time withdraws it. He tries to swear the group to himself again. Daryl arrives at the factory and sees a number of walkers who have attacked the killed men. Suddenly he recognizes his brother, who has also become a bitter, and kills him in tears.

The governor mistreats Milton and takes him to Andrea in the torture chamber. There he demands of him to kill Andrea and gives him a knife. Instead, Milton attacks the governor, who turns the knife against him and stabs him in the stomach. The district governor explains that if he becomes a bitter after his death, he will eventually kill Andrea. He then includes both. In the prison, the group clears everything up and loads the things onto vehicles. The impression arises that they want to drive away. Meanwhile there are various discussions between individual members of the group. In Woodbury, the governor prepares a major attack on the prison, but Tyreese and Sasha decide not to participate and to guard the residents of Woodbury. The attack on the prison began with several vehicles and heavy weapons, but the attackers entered the prison without resistance. In Woodbury, Milton can still tell Andrea that he dropped a pair of pliers under her chair that she could use to free herself. In the prison, the attackers advance into the dark corridors until they are suddenly confronted with booby traps, smoke grenades and walkers and the sirens go on. In complete panic and under fire from Maggie and Glenn, who have put on protective clothing and helmets for the prison staff, the attackers flee the prison, followed by the angry governor. Rick's group was hiding in the woods, where Carl shot one of the fleeing Woodbury boys who actually wanted to surrender. The group then goes back to the prison. The governor overtakes the convoy with his people and slows them down. He yells at her, supported by everyone, to drive back to the prison. His people reply that conquering the prison is useless to them. In a rage, the governor shoots everyone, most recently everyone who pointed his rifle in the direction of the governor for his protection. What remains are Martinez and Shumpert as well as Karen, who lies under a corpse and goes unnoticed. Meanwhile Andrea tries desperately to lift the pliers with her feet to the hands tied to the back of the chair and to free herself. Milton has since died. In prison, Rick confronts Carl, whose behavior Hershel Rick reported, and then sets off in pursuit with Daryl and Michonne. You come to the place where the governor killed his people and you find Karen. Milton turns into a walker, Andrea just manages to free himself when he comes up to her. Meanwhile, Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Karen reach the Woodbury barrier, where a gun battle breaks out with Tyreese and Sasha. Karen can defuse the situation and together they begin the search for Andrea. However, you find her next to Milton's body bitten by him. Michonne bursts into tears. Rick gives Andrea a gun at her request and she shoots herself. The group returns to prison with Tyreese and the remaining Woodbury residents.
