action

After their escape from Atlanta, the survivors decide to drive to Fort Benning . They stop on the highway clogged with wrecked cars. While the group searches the vehicles and the surrounding area for water, food and other useful items, they are surprised by a herd of walkers. Many of the survivors can hide under vehicles without being noticed. When the danger seems averted, the completely frightened Sophia is discovered by two undead in her hiding place, flees from them into the adjacent forest and then disappears without a trace. During a search for her, Carl is accidentally shot and seriously injured by the hunter Otis. Hershel Greene, on whose farm Otis lives with a few other survivors, has very good medical knowledge as a veterinarian and tries to save the boy's life. To get more supplies for a necessary operation , Otis and Shane visit the local high school , which was used as an emergency hospital at the beginning of the apocalypse. The area turns out to be a veritable bite trap and Shane, who has lost more and more inhibitions in favor of his own survival, sacrifices Otis' life in order to escape alive. After a successful operation, Carl recovers from his injury while the rest of the group, especially Daryl and Rick, continue to search intensively for the missing Sophia. Hershel makes it clear to Rick that his group may not stay on the farm longer than necessary and asks him to move on after Sophia is found. Meanwhile, Glenn falls in love with Hershel's daring older daughter Maggie, who in turn develops feelings for him. Lori learns she is pregnant and plans to end the pregnancy by overdosing on the morning-after pill . When Rick finds out, the two of them have a clarifying conversation in which Lori, despite her ex-relationship with Shane, adamantly claims that the baby is from Rick. In addition, due to frequent differences with Rick and the others, Shane feels increasingly pushed into an outsider role and develops into an unpredictable danger for his fellow men.

Towards the end of the season, the group finds out that Hershel (and some of his family too) believe that the walkers can be cured and therefore he never kills them, but keeps them locked in his barn . Thereupon Shane finally loses his composure, furiously opens the barn and demonstrates Hershel's group in a very brisk way the true nature of the walkers, among which members of his family are. To the horror of all those present, Sophia finally steps out of the barn and is released from her condition by Rick with a shot in the head . Hershel is shocked by the events and disappears from the farm. Rick and Glenn find him in his former favorite bar. There there is a bloody argument with several unknown men who leave one of their own people injured when they escape. Rick decides to help the young man and first locks him up in Hershel's shed. Since Shane fails to convince Rick of a preventive killing of the man to protect the entire group, a final conflict arises between the former best friends: Shane plans to kill Rick from behind and is stabbed by him himself. Although not bitten, Shane also mutates into a walker and is killed by Carl with a shot in the head. Dr. Jenner's testimony to Rick that all humans are infected with the plague and that it doesn't matter how a human dies, everyone mutates into a walker unless you put a bullet or knife in the skull. Meanwhile, the farm is overrun by a herd of strays and the survivors narrowly escape them together with Hershel and his two daughters. Andrea is left believing that she, like Dale, fell victim to the walkers. She survived the attack, but a horde of walkers continues to pursue her through the forest. When Andrea is now completely exhausted and threatens to lose her fight, she is saved by a mysterious person (Michonne).

The group of survivors drives towards Fort Benning , but is forced to stop on a stretch of the highway that is blocked by cars. Shane and Rick bring the shot Carl under the leadership of the hunter Otis, who fired the shot and actually only wanted to hit the deer, to a farm where another group of survivors lives. The eldest of them, Hershel Greene, has had some surgical experience and begins treating Carl as a doctor. However, in order to stop the bleeding and remove each splinter, Hershel needs some medical equipment. While Maggie, one of Hershel's daughters, goes in search of Lori in order to notify her, Shane and Otis drive to a high school to get the medical equipment they need from the hospital container there. First they manage to distract the group of undead in front of the building and enter the building unnoticed, but the "walkers" become aware of them when they leave the building, so that the two have to hide in the school.

Daryl and Andrea are looking for Sophia in the forest. While Carl's condition worsens, Otis and Shane attempt to escape high school. Glenn also brings the injured T-Dog to the farm to have him treated too. Just as Hershel is forced to start Carl's operation without the medical supplies, Shane arrives alone with the equipment so that Carl can ultimately be successfully treated and saved. He says that Otis sacrificed himself and was attacked by several "walkers", which is not true. In a flashback it becomes clear that Shane and Otis ran out of ammunition when they left the building and that both were already injured. To escape with the equipment himself, Shane shoots Otis in the leg and leaves him with the undead falling on him.

The remaining survivors also go to the farm and the search for Sophia continues. However, Shane finds the search for Sophia increasingly pointless, as the search also costs time, food and ammunition. Hershel expects the guests to leave the farm and go their own way as soon as Sophia has been found and Carl has recovered. Daryl presents Sophia's mother with a Cherokee rose after returning from an unsuccessful search. Meanwhile, Lori thinks she is pregnant. Glenn and Maggie go to a nearby pharmacy to get antibiotics and a pregnancy test, where they get closer and sleep together. Upon her return, Lori realizes that she actually has a child - it is uncertain whether Rick or Shane is the father.

A flashback shows Shane with Lori, Carl, Sophia, Carol and Ed at the beginning of the apocalypse in a traffic jam on the highway in front of Atlanta. Helicopters fly towards the big city and drop napalm bombs . The group is currently splitting up again to find Sophia. Daryl finds Sophia's doll by a river, which sometimes gives hope. A little later he falls from his horse and down a steep embankment. He falls on his crossbow and shoots its arrow in the side. While he is injured on the ground, he has visions of his brother Merle, who encourages him, but also incites him against the rest of the group. He wakes up when a walker bites his shoe and kills him and another. Due to the visions of his brother, who continues to encourage him, Daryl climbs up the slope and staggers back to the farm, but Andrea cannot identify him from a distance as a living person and shoots him. Daryl is passed unconscious from being grazed on the head, then given medical treatment and survives. Glenn wants to meet Maggie in the hayloft of the barn on the property for further sexual intercourse with her, but when he gets there he finds that the barn is full of caged undead.

Shane trains some women of the camp and also Carl in a shooting training. Glenn tells Dale about the walkers in the barn and Lori's pregnancy. It turns out that some of the Hershel family members are among the undead in the barn. Hershel hopes that one day an antidote will be found and that they can be saved. During shooting training, Andrea reveals herself to be a good shooter, and together with Shane she follows up on Sophia. Shane and Andrea have sex on the way home. Lori asks Glenn to look for abortion pills at the nearby pharmacy . After Maggie and Glenn are attacked by a walker during another visit to the pharmacy, she accuses Lori in the camp that they almost died because of her. Glenn advises Lori to educate Rick about the pregnancy before she takes the abortion pills. Dale is worried about Andrea and becomes increasingly enemies with Shane. Rick finds out about Lori's pregnancy and she confesses her relationship with Shane, which Rick already knew.

Glenn also tells the rest of the survivors about the undead in the barn. Hershel continues to demand that Rick's group leave the country house property by the weekend. However, due to Lori's pregnancy, Rick insists on staying with his family at the country house. Hershel later approaches Rick and asks him to follow him to a swamp that surrounds the farmland. There, two walkers are stuck in the mud that Hershel wants to free and lock up with the other undead in the barn. According to Hershel, if Rick's people want to stay on the country house property, they are not allowed to use force against the Walkers. Since Shane apparently plans to kill the Walkers in the barn, Dale decides to hide some firearms in the woods. Shane catches Dale doing it and takes the guns. While Shane returns to the country house with the weapons, Rick and Hershel arrive again with the two trapped Walkers. Shane furiously shoots the two walkers, who are each led on a pole with a neck loop to make it clear to Hershel that they are not sick, but undead. Shane then breaks open the barn door and the walkers inside are shot by several survivors. At the end another walker appears from the barn. The survivors are shocked to discover that it is the missing Sophia. She was bitten and apparently kept in the barn with the other undead for several days. Carol wants to fall into the arms of her child, but is prevented by Daryl. Rick steps out of the line of riflemen and shoots Sophia.

Hershel is furious that some of his family members were among the dead undead. He demands that Rick and the other survivors leave his farm immediately. The survivors now have to realize that their searches for Sophia have been in vain. Some of the residents of the country house are believed to have known about Sophia and to have captured her. One of Hershel's daughters was shocked in the massacre and collapsed. Hershel is needed for treatment, but he cannot be found on the property. Due to the incident at the barn, he is again addicted to alcohol after years of abstinence and is in a nearby bar. Glenn and Rick come to him and try to persuade him to come back to the farm. Worried Lori follows them with a car. On the street, she had a collision with a walker and rolled over with the car. At the same time, two unknown people appear in the bar and tell, among other things, about how they have overcome the apocalypse so far. They also state that Fort Benning, the current target of Rick and his group, has also been overrun by walkers. They are now looking for shelter and want to go to the farm as well. However, since the two men make an extremely dubious impression, this request is refused by Rick. This leads to a heated discussion, as a result of which Rick shoots the two strangers in self-defense .

Rick, Glenn and Hershel are about to make their way back to the farm when friends of the men who have just been shot appear in front of the bar because they heard the shots. After Rick yells through the wooden walls that their two comrades were killed in self-defense, the bar is fired and then shot back from the inside. When trying to escape through the back door of the bar, Hershel shoots one of the strangers who remains lying there screaming in pain. As more and more walkers are attracted by the shots, the strangers flee and leave another one of theirs behind who has impaled his leg while jumping from the roof of the bar. This is taken by Rick, Glenn and Hershel.

Lori struggles with two walkers when she wakes up from unconsciousness in the crashed car. She is picked up by Shane in the street after the survivors noticed her absence. The injured stranger named Randall is treated by Hershel in the country house. A discussion ensues among the survivors as to whether it was right to take the injured man to the farm despite being blindfolded after three of his comrades were killed.

Rick and Shane drive to an abandoned police station to expose Randall, whom they see as a danger to the group. On the way, Rick gives Shane to understand that he is Lori's husband and also the father of the unborn baby. When they want to leave Randall with a knife, still handcuffed, he says he went to school with Maggie and also knows her father. Realizing that the boy probably also knows the location of the farm, Rick and Shane are unsure how to proceed. Shane tries to kill Randall to make sure he doesn't reveal the location of the farm to his comrades, but Rick is against it. In the context of a fight that ignites between the two, a pane of a building is smashed and several walkers are freed from it. Meanwhile, Beth, who is still traumatized, expresses her wish to kill herself on the farm. Maggie reacts in shock. Leaving Andrea with her sister for protection, she goes in search of her father Hershel. But since Andrea is of the opinion that the decision about life or death in this new world must be made by each person, she leaves Beth alone, who then tries to kill herself in the locked bathroom. When Lori and Maggie break open the bathroom door, they find Beth who has tried to cut her wrists. Maggie angrily expels Andrea from the house. Shane can save himself from the walkers in an abandoned bus. Rick and Randall bring the car to free Shane from the bus. They tie up Randall again and make their way back to the farm.

Rick now finally decides to execute Randall. However, Dale demands that the opinion of all survivors be obtained beforehand on this matter. Meanwhile, Carl steals a pistol from Daryl and explores the area around the farm. He comes across a walker who is stuck with his legs in the mud. Carl approaches the walker until he unexpectedly frees a leg and reaches for him. Carl drops the gun in shock and flees. In the evening, Randall's fate is discussed. Contrary to Dale's opinion, the majority of the survivors consider Randall to be a threat, as a heavily armed and violent gang would be at risk if they returned to join them. After the vote, Rick goes to the barn with Shane and Daryl to shoot Randall. But he is dissuaded because Carl shows up and wants to watch him. Randall is locked up again. Dale is patrolling the farm pastures that night when he is attacked by a walker. Before the other survivors can help him, his abdominal wall is torn open. There is nothing Hershel can do for him as the injury is too severe. With a coup de grace, Dale is killed by Daryl. Carl realizes that the attacker is the Swamp Walker.

Dale is buried. In memory of Dale, Rick decided to suspend Randall instead of executing him. Most of the group share this view. Only Shane still sees Randall as an acute threat to the group. Relations between the survivors and Hershel's family grow stronger. Lori confesses to Shane that she's sorry for the situation. Shane later goes to Randall in the shed. Shane first stages an escape and pretends Randall wants to join his old group. Once in the forest, Randall is killed by Shane with a broken neck. The other survivors have meanwhile noticed Randall's escape and begin to look for him. Shane comes back from the woods pretending to be overwhelmed and injured by Randall. He and Rick as well as Glenn and Daryl set out in teams of two in search of the supposedly escaped. Glenn and Daryl find Randall, who has been transformed into a Walker with no noticeable bites or scratches. Randall apparently died from a broken neck, which is why the two cannot explain why he was infected. Meanwhile, Rick and Shane have arrived back at the farm. Shane draws his gun and makes it clear to Rick that he generally disagrees with his decisions for the group. There are also strong feelings of jealousy for Lori and Carl in the game. A heated argument ensues between the two, after which Rick manages to persuade Shane and he tries to convince him that Shane doesn't have to kill him. While Shane is undecided and hesitant to shoot Rick, Rick unnoticed draws his knife and kills Shane. A short time later, Carl appears. Carl shoots Shane, who has meanwhile also risen to be a walker without a bite. Noticed by the shots, a horde of walkers set course for Rick and Carl or the farm.

The farm is overrun by a multitude of walkers. Rick and Carl are able to save themselves in a barn and burn it down together with the walkers who followed them. Some of the survivors try to defend the farm by shooting the walkers from their vehicles. But the survivors have no chance against the multitude of undead in the long run. When the walkers attack, Jimmy and Patricia are killed. The survivors are forced to flee and later meet again on the highway. After Andrea is left behind, she is on her own. She has to fight several walkers on her escape through the forest and is saved at the last moment by a mysterious person who is armed with a katana sword. This person has two undead with him, which he has chained around the neck and whose arms and lower jaw he has removed. Glenn confesses his love to Maggie. Rick confesses to the group that he killed Shane and tells that, according to Dr. Jenner also found the survivors to suffer from some sort of infection. A bite to transform into a walker is therefore not necessary. The transformation is even inevitable after death. Rick also makes it clear that if the group is to survive, they must listen to him. At the end of the episode you can see a large prison in the background some distance away.
