Johann Theodor Gericke (born May 31, 1819 in Koblenz , † August 1, 1878 in Liegnitz ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 56th Infantry Brigade .

Life

Theodor was a son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel Franz Gericke (1783-1859) and his wife Anna, née Feltz (1798-1866). His brother Karl (1821–1888) also embarked on a career in the Prussian Army and became a colonel .

Military career

Gericke attended high schools in Trier and Koblenz . After graduating, he was employed as a fusilier in the 29th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on December 6, 1835 , and was promoted to second lieutenant until mid-January 1838 . On November 1, 1842, he was assigned to the 8th Engineer Division for one year and from January 24, 1845 to the 8th Artillery Brigade . From October 12 to November 13, 1846 he worked as an educator at the cadet house in Bensberg . Gericke came on January 1, 1848 as adjutant and accounting officer of the III. Battalion in the 29th Landwehr Regiment to Simmern / Hunsrück . There he became Premier Lieutenant on October 20, 1849 and was a regimental adjutant from January 13, 1850 to April 30, 1853. Promoted to captain on February 10, 1853, he was company commander in 1st Battalion of the 29th Landwehr Regiment from May 21, 1853 to November 9, 1855. He returned on January 10, 1856 as a company commander in the 29th Infantry Regiment. There he was promoted to major on July 1, 1860, and on February 15, 1860, appointed commander of the 2nd battalion. On January 11, 1862, he was transferred to the 4th Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 63 as a battalion commander and in this capacity was promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-June 1865. In addition, during the German War, from May 29, 1866 , Gericke was in command of the occupation battalions in Oels and Schweidnitz with the functions of a regimental commander .

On March 5, 1867, Gericke was aggregated into his regiment and commanded to serve at the War Ministry . On April 4, 1867, when he was transferred to the ministry, he was appointed head of the clothing department. In this position he rose to colonel in mid-April 1867 and was appointed for his work with the Commander of the Order of the Zähringer Lion , the Order of the Württemberg Crown and the Order of Knights of St. Mauritius and Lazarus as well as the Order of St. Anna II. At the beginning of the war against France , Gericke was the commander of a regiment in the 2nd Landwehr Brigade for the duration of the mobilization . Gericke married Emma Lüder (1831-1856), daughter of the chief bailiff Franz Lüder , on December 17, 1850 in Kreuznach . The two sons Karl (1852-1853) and Theodor (1854-1856) emerged from the marriage. After the death of his first wife, he married Agnes von Schindel (1818–1868), the widow of Lieutenant General Woldemar von Trotha, in Berlin on January 4, 1863 .
