Thomas Faist (* 1957 in Memmingen ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , composition ).

Faist started playing the piano at the age of eight; he then switched to the trumpet and, at the age of twelve, to the saxophone. After finishing school, he first completed an apprenticeship with Sal Nistico at the Munich Jazz School , and then attended the Berklee College of Music . He then completed his studies at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich .

After starting out in the soul band Ruby & the Mudflaps , Dusko Goykovich brought him to the Munich Big Band , where he was involved in radio productions and a TV show with Etta Cameron . Since 1978 he has been part of Joe Haider's sextet , but has worked in his own formations with Harry Sokal , John Schröder , Costa Lukas, Larry Porter and Hermann Breuer . In 1979 he performed with the Unique Munich Saxophone Choir ( Roman Schwaller , Frank St. Peter , Leszek Zadlo , Roger Janotta , Erica Lindsay and Joe Nay ) at the Donaueschinger Musiktage and played with Klaus Weiss .

In 1982 he toured internationally with the sextet by Christoph Baumann and Hämi Hämmerli ; a live LP was made at the Zurich Jazz Festival . Then he worked with Günther Klatt and Paul Grabowsky and in 1984 became a member of the Franco-German jazz ensemble under the direction of Albert Mangelsdorff and JF Jenny-Clark . In the next few years he performed with Harald Rüschenbaum , Gerry Hayes , Max Neissendorfer and the big bands of Al Porcino and Thilo Wolf .

In his quartet first played Peter O'Mara , Henning Sieverts and Wolfgang Haffner , then Walter Lang , Thomas Stabenow and Rick Hollander . From 1996 four albums were created under his own name, which also document his work as a composer. In 2003 he founded his trio with Helmut Nieberle and Sava Medan. He also works with Dani Felber .
