action

When her husband, Naval Officer Gene Mitchell, is transferred to a base in Norfolk , Virginia , Kitty Mitchell decides to move with her nine-month-old twin daughters to live with their parents in New York. The problem is that Sam and Frances Whitaker only have a very small apartment, which they also have to share with an Irma Dalrymple, an old aunt. After a while, when Kitty asks her parents to look after the twins so that she can visit her husband, Irma clears her room to make room for the girls and moves into the living room. Archie, the son of the Whitakers, lives in the same house with his pregnant wife Hazel. When the landlord Steele found out about Hazel's pregnancy and the young couple gave up the apartment on the grounds that children were not wanted in the house, the extended family's housing problems escalated.

Misunderstandings arise when Kitty calls New York from Norfolk to inquire about her children. Fearing that something bad has happened, she decides to return home immediately. The Whitakers are now facing further problems when Frances informs her husband that they want to invest part of the money they have saved for a new house. Sam does not know how to respond to this message, because he's savings in securities invested. To make matters worse, Frances maintains the family through her work, while Sam struggles with housework, raising children and other problems.

When Kitty, Sam and Irma are on their way to the airport to pick up Gene, who has announced a weekend break at short notice, and Frances meets with Mr. Steele for a conversation, the maid stays behind with the twins, finds a bottle of Scotch whiskey, and drink more of it than is good for you. While the family misses Gene at the airport because he has taken an earlier plane, he finds the apartment abandoned, but with an empty scotch bottle instead. When Kitty and the rest of the family are back, the worried parents go looking for their children together. During this time, Archie and Hazel show up, who went into labor prematurely. A call to the hospital reveals that there are currently no beds available, which is why Hazel has to give birth at home. Sam bursts into this chaos with his message that he has invested the money that Frances needs.

Gene and Kitty at least find their children again, whom the drunken maid took for a walk in the stroller. After everyone is back together, including Lieutenant Joe Franklin and his pregnant wife Marian as well as the doctor Dr. Bartell count, Franklin, who studied law, explains that Steele has no way of evicting the family from their apartment. And then there's the good news that Sam's investment has paid for itself and has increased in value enormously as a result of a merger.

Production and Background

The film was shot from the beginning of June to August 1, 1944. Charles Previn acted as music director, and WV Wolfe as sound director , who was nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Sound” category.

According to a message in AEx , Sol Lesser bought the rights to their play for $ 50,000 from Henry and Phoebe Ephron to reinstate his young Stage Door Canteen (1943) stars Cheryl Walker, Lon McCallister , Marjorie Riordan and William Terry. It was rumored that William Wadsworth, who had played the role of doctor on Broadway , as well as Charlotte Greenwood, who had played the unmarried aunt there, would also slip into her stage roles in the film, but this turned out to be a fallacy.

criticism

Letterboxd believed that humor was often mistaken for noise in this 1940s farce. However, if you like diaper and bottle warmer jokes, you will love the movie.

Award

In 1946 , sound director WV Wolfe was nominated for an Oscar for RCA Sound with the film in the category "Best Sound" , which however went to Stephen Dunn and the film drama The Bells of St. Mary's .
