Thumbsucker (German: Daumenlutscher , Alternative title: Thumbsucker - Stay as you are! ) Is an American feature film by Mike Mills from the year 2005. The plot is based on an article published in 1999 novel by Walter Kirn .

action

Seventeen-year-old Justin differs from his peers in one point: he sucks his thumb in stressful situations. His father Mike, a failed football star, is trying, as is his orthodontist Dr. Lyman to get him used to this - in vain, because communication between the generations is not successful. The esoteric Dr. Lyman, who also sees himself as a therapist, with hypnosis . Justin has completely different problems at school: His fear of failure in the debating club as well as his big crush Rebecca. While the American panacea psychotropic drugs are used for the former, which Justin soon disinhibits in every respect, his great love will slip away from him.

Clip director Mike Mills draws with his first major film not only a satirical precise portrait of a suburban American family: the desire and the frustration of the first love, the American school system and competitive spirit will be just as illuminated as Justin cannabis - and Ritalin - consumption .

Reviews

“The adaptation of the novel, which is characterized by everyday impressions, resists the temptation to blow up the manageable story. Rather, she always finds a secure grounding to portray the characters credibly. The first film consistently refuses to assign any psychological guilt. "

"With a lot of subtle comedy, director Mike Mills describes the troubles of growing up in a world in which parents are often more infantile than their children."

"This film adaptation of Walter Kirn's novel of the same name, The Thumbsucker , features an entertaining, slightly bizarre and well-cast story about the eternal themes of growing up, self-discovery and the value of families."

Lost in Translation star Scarlett Johansson was originally intended for the role of Rebecca . She was replaced by Kelli Garner shortly before filming began.

To date, director Mike Mills is known for several productions of commercials ( Nike , VW , Levi Strauss & Co. ) and music videos ( Air , Moby ).
