Timothy Mead (born May 28, 1981 in Chelmsford ) is an English opera singer ( countertenor ) with a focus on baroque opera .

Life

While at school in Chelmsford, Tim (Timothy) Mead began singing in the Chelmsford Cathedral choir . He then studied cello and piano at Trinity College of Music in London. This was followed by studies in singing and musicology. Mead was trained at the Choir School of King's College Cambridge from Charles Brett and at the London Royal College of Music from Robin Blaze .

His repertoire spans vocal music from the early 17th to the 21st century, from Claudio Monteverdi to Harrison Birtwistle , of whose The Minotaur he premiered in 2008 . His focus is on baroque operas, where he mainly makes music with ensembles from the field of historical performance practice and is considered one of the leading countertenors.

Mead has performed in the opera houses of Amsterdam, Chicago, London, Lyon and Paris. He has played with orchestras such as the Academy of Ancient Music , Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin , the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble , Bach Collegium Japan , Concerto Köln , The English Concert , Les Arts Florissants , the New York Philharmonic , the Nederlandse Bachvereniging , the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the RIAS Chamber Choir and sang under renowned conductors such as William Christie , Thomas Hengelbrock , Vladimir Jurowski , Raymond Leppard , Masaaki Suzuki and Jos van Veldhoven . He gained greater fame when he appeared at the BBC Proms in 2016 with the B minor Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach . He made his debut here in 2004 with the Missa Bruxellensis by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber .

In addition to some Bach cantatas , he sang the altaries in all of Bach's great vocal works ( St. Matthew Passion , St. John Passion , Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat ). Mead took over the roles in the Italian baroque operas by Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli , Agostino Steffani , Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Antonio Vivaldi . The operas by Georg Friedrich Handel are particularly important . Works by Henry Purcell and operas by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are on the program as well as modern works by Benjamin Britten , George Benjamin , Philip Glass and Birtwistle. His CD recordings have received several awards, including the Gramophone Classical Music Awards .

Mead is co-founder and singer of the ensemble The Prince Consort , which stylistically offers a broad spectrum of vocal music.
