Death from the Deep is a German-Austrian disaster film , produced by Crazy Film GmbH for ProSiebenSat.1 Media . The thriller was first broadcast on ProSieben and ORF in September 2009 and has been repeated several times since then, including on Sat.1 .

Thematically, this disaster film is reminiscent of Frank Schätzing's The Swarm . Out of the blue, bathers on the German North Sea coast fall seriously ill, sometimes resulting in death. Swimming in the sea can initially be identified as the common cause. Doctor Eva Meinert informs the Federal Environment Agency , which is investigating under the direction of neurotic Peter Kranz and his team, including marine biologist Finn. Single-celled cells are quickly located, which mutate into multicellular cells and feed on substances containing petroleum. Not only the fictional North Sea island Nordrum next to Borkum , which is considered to be the source of origin, has to be evacuated. The pathogen spreads like an epidemic to the groundwater and drinking water. While other participants are also up to mischief with dark financial transactions, the uncontrollable ruthlessness of evolution has struck and created creatures that could bring humanity to an end. Peter Kranz and his team take on the relentless fight against the unknown.
