Today , commonly referred to as The Today Show , is an American television show that presents news, information, and conversation (primarily interviews) in the form of a morning magazine ( breakfast television ) on the National Broadcasting Company's NBC television channel . The program, launched on January 14, 1952, is the world's oldest and most successful morning information program. It is also the third longest running US television production.
history
The inventor of The Today Show 's Pat Weaver . According to his ideas, the show with Dave Garroway went on air for the first time on January 14, 1952 . The mascot of the first years was the chimpanzee J. Fred Muggs . Due to its great success, which was soon achieved, the show became a model for numerous US offshoots and not least the ZDF morning magazine .
Length and charisma
In the early years it was produced for three hours and only shown for two hours in the EST and CST time zones from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. (and thus for two hours). Soon afterwards it was produced for five hours, of which two hours were broadcast live in the four time zones. From 1958 onwards, production took only two hours and the broadcast was accordingly delayed.
From October 2, 2000, a three-hour program was produced and broadcast continuously; since September 10, 2007, it has been four hours a day.
Originally only broadcast on weekdays (excluding US-wide public holidays), it has also been broadcast on Sundays (one hour long) since 1987 and on Saturdays (two hours long) since 1992.
Production site
Originally, Today was produced in the RCA Exhibition Hall on Manhattan 49th Street . Today the Christie's auction house is located there .
In 1958, the show moved to Studio 3K in the RCA Building opposite, before moving to a studio on the street in 1962. In 1965 there was another move to the RCA Building, which was due to the beginning of color television broadcasting (NBC could not afford two news studios with expensive color cameras). For the next 20 years or so, the broadcast occupied various floors of the NBC headquarters, including a. Studio 3K in the 1970s, 8G in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and most recently Studio 3B from 1983 to 1994.
In June 1994, Today moved into what is now Studio 1A in Rockefeller Center , right on a street crossing .
During the last major renovation and redesign of the studio in the summer of 2006, the program was recorded in an outdoor studio on Rockefeller Plaza . Since the renovation work was completed, Today has been produced and broadcast in HDTV (1080i). In the fall of 2013, Studio 1A was renovated again, which meant that the show was moved outside to Rockefeller Plaza, as in 2006. The new studio was inaugurated on September 16, 2013.
Today moderators
Main moderators
In the November 29, 2017 edition, it became known that the previous main presenter of the show, Matt Lauer , had been dismissed without notice for “inappropriate behavior” towards a work colleague. The statement from NBC News CEO Andrew Lack was read as the first message of the day by Lauer's colleague Savannah Guthrie during the live broadcast. Guthrie only received the information himself shortly before the start of the broadcast. The allegations concern sexual misconduct during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, which continued afterwards. Lauer was one of the most famous and influential presenters of an American news program and had been at the station for over 20 years, initially as a substitute presenter and since 1997 as the main presenter of the Today Show.

Theme music
Dave Garroway chose Sentimental Journey by Les Brown as the first theme music. In 1962, when Hugh Downs took over the show, Melodie au Crepuscule by Django Reinhardt was the new theme music, which was replaced in 1963 by Mist by Bobby Hackett and John B. Seng .
In 1971 Ray Ellis composed his own instrumental title theme called This is Today . Since Ellis had based his composition very closely on Day by Day of the musical Godspell , he was sued and lost. In 1978, therefore, the theme had to be changed and was based on NBC's signature music. In 1982 a new version of the theme was created, which was used until 1985.
In 1985, John Williams wrote a number of theme songs for NBC, including two for Today . One was based on The Mission , which he had created for the NBC Nightly News program and was used until 1993, a second was called Scherzo for Today and was used until 1990.
Fanfare music has been used since then .
