Toleranz is a German film drama from the director Marc-Andreas Bochert from 2014. The first broadcast took place on November 21, 2014 as part of the ARD theme week “Different from you think”.

action

Karoline Benzko, known as Karo, is the most successful player in the HSG Borussia 1898 handball team . The team is looked after by coach Tobias Winkler, who discovered and promoted Karo, and by co-trainer Helene Gärtner. The main sponsor of the association is the company Erdgas Real, where Karo is also doing an apprenticeship. The team has just won the qualification for the European Cup in Amsterdam , and Karo has been appointed to the national handball team. Together with teammate Jasmin from Iran, Karo is promoting Erdgas Real with an advertising campaign under the motto “With fairness and tolerance to success”.

Karo has been with her boyfriend Martin for years. He had stood by her during a serious injury and has now rented an apartment, which he is renovating to move in with Karo. She knows about his past in the right-wing scene, but he assures her that it is over. While Karo's brother Robert and her mother openly reject Martin because of his attitude, their father accepts him because he sees that Karo loves him.

Before leaving for the European Cup, a photographer takes photos of the team, including Karo and Martin, for the local newspaper. Later in the editorial office, his supervisor recognizes Martin in the photos and changes the article to a revelatory story about Karo's relationship with a neo-Nazi . Other media pick up the story and the team comes under pressure in Amsterdam. The sponsor and the club management would like Winkler to remove Karo from the team in order to prevent damage to the club and the company's image, but the coach is still behind his best player. In an internal discussion, the majority of the team finally confronts Karo with the decision to either break up with Martin or leave the team. Karo then leaves the team and returns to Germany alone before the end of the tournament. Once there, she learns that her brother has moved from home because he can no longer stand the fact that she is still with Martin.

In Amsterdam, the team loses the game without diamonds and is eliminated from the tournament, Winkler resigns as coach, and co-trainer Gärtner takes over his position. The national coach is revoking Karo's appointment to the national team. In the last scene, Martin drives to Karo's parents' house and wants to talk to her, but she doesn't open the door. The film ends with a quote from the Bible:

Do you really want to break my right, find me guilty so that you'll be right? ( Hi 40.8  EU )

background

Tolerance is after empathy , inclusion - together different and dyslexia is the fourth film that director Marc-Andreas Borchert made for an ARD theme week. The film was shot from December 2013 to June 2014 in Berlin and the surrounding area, among others.

The film contains parallels to the rower Nadja Drygalla , who prematurely ended her participation in the 2012 Olympic Games after her relationship with an NPD functionary became known .

criticism

“Thanks to the differentiated approach to the subject, the film offers a wide range of discussion approaches, especially for school lessons. In addition, tolerance is not only meant well, but also well done. "
