Thomas Garrett "Tom" Cavanagh (born March 24, 1982 in Warwick , Rhode Island , † January 6, 2011 in Providence , Rhode Island) was an American ice hockey player who during his active career, among other things, for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League played on the position of the center .

Career

After Cavanagh had played for the Toll Gate High School team between 1997 and 2000 , he went to the Phillips Exeter Academy in the summer of 2000 , where he played for their ice hockey team and was able to convince with 82 points in just 31 games. The following summer he moved to the renowned Harvard University and ran there for the university team in the ECAC Hockey of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his rookie season he collected 25 points scorer in 34 games. There followed another three seasons at the university, in the last of which he was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the ECAC and was named Defensive Striker of the Year.

In the summer of 2005, the San Jose Sharks signed him, who had already selected him in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in 182nd place. Due to an injury Cavanagh could not take part in the pre-season training camp and was therefore transferred to the Cleveland Barons farm team in the American Hockey League . There he was used in 64 games and scored 21 points. After the Barons had moved from Cleveland to Worcester in the summer of 2006 and renamed the Worcester Sharks , he played for the Sharks' new farm team from the 2006/07 season . In the two following years Cavanagh could each achieve personal bests in the categories goals, assists and points. As a reward, he was appointed to the NHL roster of the San Jose Sharks for the first time at the end of the 2007/08 season and made his debut against the Los Angeles Kings on April 3 . He achieved his first NHL scorer point after just 36 seconds with an assist . Since the 1989/90 season , this was only three players faster. Despite his good debut, there was only one use this season, as he was sent back to Worcester. There he ended the season and began the next one there. After numerous changes in the roster of the Worcester Sharks in the summer break, Cavanagh went as the center of the first assault row in the 2008/09 game year , during which he was again ordered into the NHL roster of the San Jose Sharks in December 2008.

In the second half of 2009 he was a so-called free agent before he was signed by the Manchester Monarchs in January 2010 . There he played the 2009/10 season to the end. He was then used at the beginning of the 2010/11 season in five games for their league rivals Springfield Falcons , but then injured his shoulder and was released from his contract on November 9.

Cavanagh, who had struggled with mental health problems during his career, was found dead in the garage at Providence Place Mall near his car on January 6, 2011 . The autopsy revealed that Cavanagh had died from multiple traumatic injuries caused by blunt violence. The police could not rule out suicide .

The striker made a total of 322 professional appearances in the North American AHL and NHL in his playing career. He scored 177 points scorer. He played all of his 18 NHL games for the San Jose Sharks in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons and achieved three scorer points in these. Despite leaving the Sharks franchise in the summer of 2009, at the time of his death he was still the regular-season player for the Worcester Sharks in the AHL.
