From 2005 to 2012 he was an assessor in the district executive committee of the SPD Treptow-Köpenick for the topics of democracy and extremism . In June 2006, Schreiber was one of the first signatories for the establishment of the then new pragmatic wing "Aufbruch Berlin" within the Berlin SPD. The “Aufbruch Berlin” understood itself “as the group within the Berlin SPD that wants to advance the social democratic reform debate. We feel connected to those who follow a pragmatic and undogmatic approach to social democratic politics. ”Schreiber retired there at the end of 2011 and has not belonged to any party wing since then . The "Aufbruch Berlin" has not been actively involved since 2012.

In the debate about the pirates' “sloppy look” in the state parliaments, MP Fabio Reinhardt caused a sensation with a style break. He showed up for a special meeting of the Interior Committee in beige shorts. He promptly received a complaint from Tom Schreiber. "Since the pirates arrived, the optical mores have fallen, that's unworthy."

In the election to the House of Representatives in September 2016 , he was again directly elected to parliament.

After his re-election in September 2011, he joined the association of lesbian and gay police officers in Berlin-Brandenburg (VelsPol BB eV) as a supporting member. Furthermore, he member Müggelheimer home eV, home club Köpenick eV, The International Opera Club eV, friends and supporters of the Berlin State Opera , the Social Democratic Association for Local Politics eV and the trade union ver.di .

Political issues

Tom Schreiber has been dealing with right-wing extremism (NPD, DVU, Free Forces, DVU, PRO movement), left-wing extremism ("Autonomous", "Antifascist Left Berlin"), Salafism and Islamist terrorism ("Al-Qaida", "Ansar al-Islam"). He supports the intensive offender and threshold offender concept and initiatives against violence (“Strong without violence”, “Stop Tokat”). In addition, he was involved in setting up the control center for sectarian issues (“ Scientology ”).

As a reaction to mishaps in the investigation into the right-wing extremist terror network National Socialist Underground , Federal Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich ( CSU ) brought a merger of constitutional protection offices into play. The states of Berlin and Brandenburg reject this, however. Schreiber spoke out in favor of not hastily setting up a ban on thinking, but rather awaiting the consequences of the parliamentary investigative committees of the federal and state governments in matters of the National Socialist underground. "Berlin and Brandenburg are not only geographically close, but also in terms of content, for example when it comes to right-wing extremism," said Schreiber, referring to the cross-border activities of right-wing extremists.

In response to the increasing violence by neo-Nazis in Treptow-Köpenick , Schreiber called for a zero tolerance strategy. The executive must post more riot police and check neo-Nazi shops known in the city more often. "The control pressure must be noticeable, day and night."

Since 2012, Schreiber has also dealt with the complex of rocker crime in Berlin and in the federal government. He advocates the conception of a state dropout program. He also sees a focus in the in-depth analysis of the specific economic activities of the rocker scene. It has to be clarified, for example, how much the rockers invest in legal business areas.

Gay-lesbian "Rainbow Bridge" Berlin-Tel Aviv

When a masked person entered the cellar of the "Gay and Lesbian Association" (Agudah) in Tel Aviv on the evening of August 1, 2009, they shot at young lesbians and gays who were there without warning. Two young people died, thirteen others were injured, some seriously, and many other employees of the center and witnesses who came to the aid of the injured were also traumatized. The Rainbow Bridge project was launched at the initiative of Schreiber, the Jewish Community and the Berlin gay anti-violence project Maneo . It wants to build a bridge between the gay and lesbian scenes in Tel Aviv, Berlin, Potsdam and Cologne, all in the name of strengthening mutual exchange, the process of understanding and solidarity. Representatives of the Tel Aviv police and city administration as well as young gays and lesbians from the Israeli city on the Mediterranean were invited to Berlin and Cologne in 2010. In 2011 a delegation from Berlin and Cologne made a return visit to Tel Aviv, among them a cross-party delegation from the Berlin House of Representatives.
