Tombs is an American sludge and post-metal band from New York City , New York that was formed in 2007.

history

The band was formed in 2007 in Brooklyn by singer and guitarist Mike Hill, bassist Dominic Seita and drummer Justin Ennis . Hill's own label Black Box Recordings released a first, self-titled EP that same year, as well as a split release together with Planks . The band then switched to Relapse Records , about which Winter Hours (2009), whereupon bassist Carson James and drummer Andrew Hernandez could be heard as new members, and the album Path of Totality (2011) produced by John Congleton was released. The latter was named album of the year by Decibel . The band also went on tours through North America and Europe and played with groups such as Isis , Pelican , Wolves in the Throne Room , The Secret and Kylesa . On the album Savage Gold , which was released in 2014, the band consisted of Mike Hill, drummer Andrew Hernandez, bassist Ben Brand and guitarist Garett Bussanick. The sound carrier was produced by Erik Rutan . J. Bennett and Sera Timms from Ides of Gemini can be heard on the recording as guest musicians.

style

According to the band biography on tombscult.com , the band has been influenced by black metal and industrial . According to James Christopher Monger from Allmusic , the band plays a mix of post-rock , sludge and black metal. Simon Dümpelmann from Rock Hard assigned the band to post-metal. Compared to its predecessors, Savage Gold tends more towards Black and Death Metal . In an interview with Dümpelmann, Mike Hill named artists like Origin and Nick Cave as influences. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer wrote that Hill was influenced by noise rock groups on the Amphetamine Reptile Records label and black metal bands. In an interview with Müller, Hill named groups like My Bloody Valentine and Deathspell Omega as influences. According to Müller, Path of Totality is rougher, more mad and more primitive than Winter Hours , which for him was still post-metal. According to Hill, the increased aggressiveness is due to the new drummer Andrew Hernandez, who is more technical and aggressive, whereby he emphasizes the black metal influences. Petra Schurer from the same magazine wrote about Path of Totality that the band is in the border area between Black Metal and Hardcore Punk . The music is a mixture of "Sludge, atmospheric Black Metal, some pure Doom and also a pinch of Death ". The speed and mood in the songs change frequently. The album is very groove- oriented and melodic. In a later issue, Schurer described the music on Savage Gold as a mixture of black metal, punk and hardcore punk. The album looks more metallic compared to its predecessor .
