Anthony Ernest "Tony" Marsh (born July 20, 1931 Stourbridge , † May 7, 2009 in Petersfield ) was a British automobile racing driver .
Career
Anthony Marsh raced everything that had four wheels in the early 1950s. He competed in rallies , participated in hill climbs and drove circuit races. He won the British Hill Climbing Championship three times in the 1950s.
In 1957 he bought a Formula 2 - Cooper T43 . With the little Cooper he dominated Formula Libre in Great Britain and made his debut in the drivers' world championship at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring . Marsh finished fourth in the Formula 2 classification and, five laps behind Juan Manuel Fangio in a Maserati 250F, fifteenth overall. In 1958, Marsh replaced the T43 with a T45 , which he raced in until the end of the decade.
In 1961, now with a Lotus 18 , Marsh was successful again in hill climbs. After a few failures in a BRM racing car, Marsh won three more British hill-climbing championships in a 4.3-liter Marsh Oldsmobile in the 1960s.
Marsh, who drove a Lotus Elite together with John Wagstaff in the 1960 Le Mans 24-hour race , is the most successful British hill climber in history with his six titles (1955, 1956, 1957, 1965, 1966, 1967).
In the 1960s and 1970s he was also the English co-commentator for Jochen Luck at the Nürburgring .
Marsh died in May 2009, aged 77, after being hospitalized with difficulty breathing shortly before that.
