Transatlantic is a supergroup founded in 1999 made up of four musicians from the progressive rock scene.

history

The founders of the band are Neal Morse (then Spock's Beard ) and Mike Portnoy (then Dream Theater ), who got together with bassist Pete Trewavas ( Marillion ) in 1999 . The guitarist was originally Jim Matheos ( Fates Warning ), but he was unable to participate due to scheduling difficulties. Instead, Roine Stolt ( The Flower Kings ) became a member.

The band's music is clearly based on great models from progressive rock of the 1970s such as Yes , Emerson, Lake and Palmer , Jethro Tull and Genesis . Many melodies come from Morse's pen, but Portnoy, Trewavas and above all Stolt also contributed a lot to the songwriting. Between 2000 and 2002 the band released the two studio albums SMPTe and Bridge Across Forever . A successful tour was carried out for each of the albums. Daniel Gildenlöw (keyboards, guitar, background vocals) was hired as a guest musician for the second of these tours .

In 2002, the band members separated for the time being after Morse announced that he would now devote himself to Christian music . His former colleagues have since become more involved in their main bands. Drummer Mike Portnoy has also worked on five solo albums by Morse, and Morse and Stolt continue to work on joint projects, most recently in the form of guest appearances on their respective solo albums.

In October 2009, the concept album The Whirlwind was released after a break of almost 7 years . On the tour, Transatlantic received musical support from Daniel Gildenlöw ( Pain of Salvation ).

In 2014 the fourth studio album Kaleidoscope was released , followed by a world tour, this time the American musician Ted Leonard ( Enchant , Spock's Beard) acted as tour support. The concert in Cologne's E-Werk was recorded and published in autumn 2014 under the title KaLIVEoscope , with one of the available versions also including material from the concert in Tilburg .

In addition to the four studio albums, there are now seven live albums, a making-of of the second studio album entitled Building the Bridge , a compilation with demo versions and a remix version of the debut.
