Treppendorf is located in Niederlausitz on the border with the Spreewald immediately west of the city of Lübben. Surrounding towns are Lubolz in the north, the city of Lübben in the east, Neuendorf in the south, the Luckau district of Duben and its district of Kaden in the southwest and the districts of Niewitz in the west and Rickshausen in the northwest, which are part of the Bersteland community .

Treppendorf was first mentioned in 1419 as "Trependorff". The place name is derived from the Slavic personal name "Treba". The place name is a so-called mixed name , in this case a German place name that was formed from a Slavic name.

After the agreements of the Congress of Vienna , Treppendorf came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 . There the place was in the district of Lübben in the administrative district of Frankfurt .
