The 20th Trofeo Karlsberg was determined by the national colors of Austria. The President of the Association of German Cyclists , Rudolf Scharping , also paid a visit to the Saarland stage trip, some of which led through French territory.

On Corpus Christi the first stage started at Saarbrücken Ensheim Airport , 119 drivers from 14 nations made their way through the municipality of Mandelbachtal and towards the finish in Saarbrücken . The stage win in the sprint went to Matthias Brändle, ahead of Indulis Bekmanis from Latvia and Dominik Nerz, the driver of the German national team .

On the second day, the German road team celebrated their first victory. The stage had its greatest difficulty on the climb behind Ormesheim , which had to be done twice. In the last lap, a five-man leading group had separated, in which the Dane Rasmus Guldhammer set the tone. However, the outliers were set again three kilometers from the finish. In the sprint, John Degenkolb won after 110 km ahead of the Slovak Peter Sagan and the Canadian Guillaume Boivin . Matthias Brändle arrived in the peloton at the same time as the winner and kept the yellow jersey .

The individual time trial (EZF) over 8.6 km on flat terrain started in Reinheim and led across the French border through Bliesbruck and Frauenberg and back to the Saarland to the finish in Habkirchen . Dominik Nerz was the winner, ahead of John Degenkolb and the Danish Jimmi Sørensen . Matthias Brändle finished fourth and defended the overall lead.

The second half-stage of the day started in Völklingen and led through mountainous terrain to Großrosseln . On this stage, the Austrian team had to do more than 40 km of leadership work in order to catch up with the runaway Latvian Indulis Bekmanis who had run away. This succeeded shortly before the last climb, although Bekmanis had a 90 second lead in the meantime. The Danish national team achieved a double victory through Ricky Jørgensen and Rasmus Guldhammer ahead of Dominik Eberle from the Rhineland-Palatinate team.

The royal stage with start and finish in Niedergailbach over 134 km led back to neighboring France. The drivers had to conquer the Reinheimer Berg seven times, and the juniors had to climb over 1000 meters on that day. The winner of the last stage was Peter Sagan ahead of Dominik Nerz and Rasmus Guldhammer. Overall victory went to the Austrian Matthias Brändle, ahead of the German Dominik Nerz and the Latvian Indulis Bekmanis.
