Turid Karlsen
Turid Karlsen (* 1961 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian opera singer ( soprano ) and professor. She is known for her repertoire and her roles as a teenage dramatic soprano . In 2004 she won the Kirsten Flagstad Prize for her portrayal of Senta in Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman with the Norwegian Opera . During her career she worked with numerous well-known conductors such as Daniel Barenboim , Kent Nagano , Dennis Russell Davies , Placido Domingo , Hartmut Haenchen , and Michael Tilson Thomas . Karlsen currently teaches as a professor for singing at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . She had previously been appointed to the Hamburg University of Music and Theater .
Life
Karlsen studied singing at the Maastricht Academy of Music . There she was a student of Mya Besselink . In 1983 she passed her exams as a music teacher, and in 1986 as an opera and concert soloist cum laude. From 1985 to 1992 she was a permanent member of the ensemble of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe . She then worked at the Bonn Theater until 1997 under the direction of Artistic Director Giancarlo del Monaco . Karlsen had guest appearances at opera houses such as the Bayreuth Festival , 1997 to 1998 as Leonore in Lenore (original version of Fidelio ), at the Opera of the Kassel State Theater , the Hanover State Theater , the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the stages of the City of Cologne , the Komische Berlin Opera , Dortmund Theater , Dallas Opera , Dutch Opera , Los Angeles Opera, Madison Opera, Montreal Opera, Orlando Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Stockholm Royal Opera , Opera Pacific (California), am Teatro Real in Madrid, at the Grand Theater Quebec , at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, in the Tonhalle Zurich , the Barbican Hall and the Royal Festival Hall London.
In 2006 Karlsen hit the headlines when she was the first soprano to sing the title role in Puccini's Turandot since Birgit Nilsson in the Gothenburg Opera. In 2008 she appeared as a soloist at the grand opening of the new Oslo Opera House. Since 2017 she has been the artistic director of the Kirsten Flagstad Festival.
