The USS Norfolk (SSN-714) , a nuclear-powered submarine of the Los Angeles-class submarine , is the second ship of the United States Navy which, after the city Norfolk , Virginia was named.

history

SSN-714 was commissioned in 1976 and laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1979 . In 1981 the Norfolk was launched and was christened, in 1983 the commissioning took place. On July 23, 1988, the first launch took place by a Mark 48 Mod.5 (ADCAP) heavyweight torpedo when the Norfolk sank the decommissioned destroyer USS Jonas Ingram (DD-938) .

The Norfolk was in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery , Maine for overhaul between 1991 and 1993 .

On August 25, 2004 the Norfolk returned to Norfolk after completing a 22-month Engineering Refueling Overhaul (ERO) at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. In 2006/2007 the ship sailed alongside USS Nassau (LHA-4) , followed by another transfer at the end of 2007. In May 2008, the Norfolk took part in the multinational exercise Operation Arabian Shark . In 2010 she moved to European and Middle East waters for six months.
