U 19 (German Armed Forces)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

U 19 is a former class 206 submarine of the German Navy . It was in service from 1973 to 1998 and its home port was in Kiel .

history

The boat was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel. The keel was laid on January 5th, 1971. The launch took place on December 15, 1972, the commissioning on November 9, 1973. The boat belonged to the 1st submarine squadron.

The city of Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate sponsored the submarine. As a visible sign of this, there was a buoy in front of the Ludwigstor of the Germersheim fortress for a long time .

Many class 206 submarines were later converted to type 206 Alpha. The U 19, however, was taken out of service on August 23, 1998 after 25 years of service without being converted. A planned sale to Indonesia did not take place, so U 19 was scrapped .
