U 11 is a German submarine of the submarine class 205 of the Bundeswehr . It had the NATO identification S 190 . Since 2005 the boat can be viewed as the Fehmarn submarine museum in the port of Burgstaaken .

history

The construction was carried out by the Kieler Howaldtswerke , the commissioning as the third of the twelve boats of this class on June 21, 1968. It covered a total of 177,898 nautical miles, of which 15,530 were submerged. From January 5, 1987 to September 30, 1988 the conversion to an underwater target display boat took place. In addition, it received a second hull, which was supposed to protect the actual pressure hull from damage in the event of accidental hits.

On February 3, 1997, U 11 collided with the Finnish 90,000 GRT tanker Natura south of the island of Langeland . The boat was slightly damaged on the fairing and the tower.

After its decommissioning on October 30, 2003, it can now be viewed as a museum ship in Burgstaaken on Fehmarn . In memory of the long sponsorship with the large district town of Öhringen , the propeller of the submarine was installed at the new U11-Ring roundabout at the entrance to the new Öhringer Limespark development area.

The Fehmarn submarine museum was opened in the port of Burgstaaken in summer 2005. It took two cranes to lift the 560-ton submarine into place. The boat is above water, fully visible, and is reached via a pedestrian bridge. The museum also has an exhibition pavilion where you can learn about the German submarines and their history in the post-war period. Visiting the submarine is possible without restrictions.
