1988 marine casualty

The boat became famous when in 1988 it collided with the Norsk Hydro's Oseberg B drilling platform off Bergen (Norway) at a depth of around 30 meters. The boat got caught in the underwater steel cables of the oil platform and the associated hotel platform Polyconfidence about forty meters away . Since the exact position of the platforms was not recorded on his nautical chart , it was not possible for the commander, Kapitänleutnant Michael Setzer, to prevent the accident during the dive . Although he recorded the drilling platform with the periscope , the holding cables were not discovered. Nevertheless, he managed to maneuver the boat to the surface of the water. People were not harmed in the accident. The total damage to the drilling platform amounted to tens of millions of D-Marks .
