history

The boat was built at the Howaldtswerke shipyard in Kiel and put into service on January 14, 1969. U 12 belonged to the 1st submarine squadron , which was stationed in Kiel until 1991 and then in Eckernförde .

On April 2, 1971, the boat collided with the GDR freighter Fritz Reuter 6 nm east of Fehmarn in thick fog . Due to the severe damage, it was decommissioned on April 30, 1971 and brought to Emden at the beginning of 1972. There the boat was repaired and improved again at Rheinstahl Nordseewerke from 1972 to 1974. It was put back into service on January 8, 1974.

In the 1990s, the U 12 was converted into a test vehicle for new technologies, especially sonar technology . It thus served the development of the latest submarine class 212A .

U 12 was the last active class 205 submarine and was decommissioned on June 21, 2005. About the company VEBEG was U 12 sold on 4 July 2007 to the company's Orla Produktforretnig in Denmark. It was taken over on September 24, 2008 and towed to Denmark for scrapping.

The city of Aulendorf took over the sponsorship .
