The submarine U 26 of the German Navy with the NATO designation S175 belonged to the submarine class 206 . It was built by Rheinstahl-Nordseewerke in Emden and put into service on March 13, 1975 in the Tirpitzhafen in Kiel .
history
Neustadt an der Weinstrasse is the official sponsor city of the “U 26” submarine . The "Feucht-Fröhliche-Neustadter Association" (FFN) took over the personal care of the submarine crew and the maintenance of contacts as part of this sponsorship. In October 1985 the FFN received the 3rd prize from the city of Neustadt for a float in the parade of the German grape harvest festival, which was manned by the U 26 team.
The boat suffered damage on January 21, 1983 as a result of a collision with the GDR passenger ship Völkerfreundschaft in the Fehmarn Belt. When sailing above water in rough seas, the commanding officer ordered the boat to be driven from the periscope and without the use of radar - a practice common at the time during the Cold War near Warsaw Pact naval vehicles. A lay judge in Kiel later ruled that this accident could have been avoided with radar.
In June 1986 there was a change of subordination from U 26 to the 3rd submarine squadron in Eckernförde . The conversion to the submarine class 206 A began on June 2, 1990.
On March 18, 1995, the team received the silver "Coffee Pot", a silver jug from 1894, as a performance award of the U-boat flotilla. The prize is awarded annually to a U-boat team for particularly successful work. The crew of U 26, which among other things had participated in a NATO maneuver in the Mediterranean, covered a total of 14,328 nautical miles in 2,754 operating hours.
In 2000 the 25th anniversary of the commissioning of the U 26 was celebrated. On this occasion, Christian Heumüller, at the time Oberbootsmann and Sonarmeister I, published the illustrated book “Submarine 'U 26' - Das Buch zum Boot”.
U 26 was decommissioned on November 9, 2005. On May 14th, 2008 it was auctioned at VEBEG , only to be scrapped in the course of 2010 at Scheepssloperij Nederland BV in 's-Gravendeel .
