U 33 is a type 212A submarine of the German Navy .

history

The third of four boats in the first batch of submarine class 212A was U 33 built at HDW in Kiel. The commissioning took place on June 13, 2006; it belongs to the 1st submarine squadron with home port Eckernförde . U 33 entered its future home port for the first time on October 7, 2005, under the military skipper Kapitänleutnant Kai Brand.

The first mission took the submarine to the Mediterranean on July 30, 2007 . There it took part in Operation Active Endeavor to combat international terrorism .

On May 29, 2008, the submarine undertook a missile test in the Baltic Sea . For the first time, the newly developed IDAS guided missile was successfully fired underwater from a torpedo tube and hit a simulated target in the air.

Sponsorship

The Thuringian city of Gotha took over the sponsorship for the submarine . The baptism was carried out by Jutta Doenitz, wife of the then Lord Mayor Volker Doenitz .
