Ulli Jünemann (* 7. June 1967 in Jugenheim as Ulrich Claus Jünemann ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophonist , composer ) and producer .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Seeheim and doing community service, Jünemann began studying medicine in Frankfurt am Main, before starting his private study of the saxophone in 1989 after a good 10 years at the piano (with Leszek Zadlo and Wolfhard Metz, among others ). Then he went to the Netherlands (1991–1999), where he studied saxophone for two years at the College of Arts in Amsterdam . He then moved to The Hague at the Conservatory The Hague , where he completed a master's degree. There he had lessons from Jan Menu, Ben Hermann, but above all from John Ruocco .

During this time he received various scholarships, which led him mainly to Canada and Italy. Back in Germany, he worked on projects in jazz as well as in cross-genre and popular music projects. He performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival (with Gerald Wilson ), the Getxo Festival and toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Canada. Here he works with the well-known artists Ack van Rooyen , Adam Nussbaum , Ingrid Jensen , Slide Hampton , Jim McNeely , Hugh Fraser and Phil Nimmons . In 1996 he was a finalist in the International Jazz Contest in Belgium.

In 2001 he founded the large-format European Groove Project (EGO) with Martin Lejeune, which brings together influences from dance jazz, drum and bass , acid and soul jazz . He deals with the implementation of electronic sounds and samples in jazz , especially on the saxophone and on the laptop . Here he uses various electronic equipment like the Kaoss2 Pad , Boss Loopstation , Ableton Live and others.

In 2002 the CD Let's Call It a Day was created as a co-leader with Markus Fleischer. In 2003, at the invitation of the Goethe Institute, Jünemann toured all West African countries with Markus Fleischer, Johannes Schaedlich and Keith Copeland . From 2004 to 2009, Jünemann and Fleischer toured regularly annually with Adam Nussbaum. In 2005 the CD Four! at ZYX Music, again a joint production with Markus Fleischer.

In his project bree.ze he toured with Adam Nussbaum and Jasper van't Hof . In summer 2010 there was the UJ-4tet with Thomas Stabenow , Christian Eckert and Simon Scheibel, as well as a duo with Allen Blairman . There was also the breeze - jamin 'project with Nussbaum, Jay Anderson and Jim Mullen and a trio with Blairman and Rocky Knauer .

The newly formed Ulli Jünemann Quartet has been playing since 2012 with Adam Nussbaum, Jay Anderson, Jeanfrançois Prins , Ulli Jünemann (alternative line-up with Bruno Castellucci ). The CD Triologue was released in mid-2012 with Allen Blairman on drums and Rocky Knauer on double bass. At the end of 2012 his new CD Boo Hoo was released by Nabel Records, which he presented on tours in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Jünemann has been a member of Jasper van't Hof's band Pili-Pili since January 2013 , with whom he has toured several times. He also played and toured a. a. with Graham Collier , Kenny Wheeler , Bobby Shew , Eric Vloeimans , Axel Prasuhn , the Morten Ginnerup Band, Silvia Droste , Jürgen Wuchner , Keith Copeland , Jon Sass , Thomas Siffling , Slide Hampton, Phil Nimmons or Jens Düppe .

Jünemann has been teaching at the Niedernhausen Music School since 2000 . In 2007 and 2008 he was a lecturer at the Mainz Conservatory and in 2009/10 he taught saxophone as a major at the Liszt School of Music Weimar on behalf of Wolfgang Bleibel .

Jünemann has two children and has lived in Mainz with his partner since 2001 .
