The award was launched in 2005; Since 2013 it has been awarded in two categories (books for the age groups 10 to 12 years and 12 to 14 years). The Ulm Unke award ceremony is organized by the Stadtjugendring Ulm eV in cooperation with the local book trade. The prize is usually awarded at the beginning of December at the KIBUM children's and youth book fair in Ulm . The jury now consists of more than 100 children and adolescents (2017: 180 jury members) between 10 and 14 years of age, each of whom read, comment on and rate around 50 new books using a points system. The winners of the prize will each receive a certificate and a small trophy. The best-placed books are presented to the public in a colored brochure.

The logo of the award is a stylized light green toad with round glasses reading an orange book.

In 2017, Ulmer Unke was named on the shortlist of the German Reading Prize of the Reading Foundation in the category "Outstanding municipal commitment".
