The crucifix without hands in Rechterfeld / Vechta

Hands-free crucifix in front of the Marienhospital in Vechta

Stir one cared Bronze - crucifix that Ulrich Fox anfertigte privately commissioned and on the property of his client in February 1988 Rechterfeld set up. The special feature of this crucifix is the absence of the hands on the stumps of the arms that are stretched towards the sky. The artist was inspired for this depiction by a triumphal cross in the church of St. Ludgeri in Münster , which had lost both hands after a bombing in World War II and remained unrestored as a war memorial in the church. Furthermore, according to his own admission, Fox has implemented the saying, which was already known in the Middle Ages: "I have no other hands than yours." In the sense of the Matthew saying: "What you did for one of my smallest brothers, you did it to me." . The project was actively supported by Reinhard Puche, building director at the Vechta district.

Resistance to the cross system soon arose. The majority of the members of the parish of Rechterfeld called for a “real cross” to replace Fox's work of art. At the instigation of the St. Georg parish in Vechta, the location of the crucifix was moved to the children's hospital of the Marienhospital in Vechta. The discussions about the crucifix did not end. The body was stolen at the end of September 2006. On the night of October 9th to 10th, 2006, it was deposited in the bushes in front of the hospital. Since then it has stood in the designated place in front of the clinic.

The incident sparked a flood of letters to the editor in the local press. Karl Josef Lesch , theology professor at the University of Vechta, pleaded for a positive reception of the crucifix:

“Yes, the artist wants to provoke, in the true sense of the word: call out, shake you awake from the sleepy routine of everyday life. […] Art not only wants to stimulate thought, but also calls for action: The missing hands of the Christ corpus are such a call, an appeal to love one's neighbor, to care for the sick, to comfort the sad. We encounter Christ himself in the sick, starving, prisoners, homeless and strangers. "
