Life

Una H. Moehrke studied free painting at the Berlin University of the Arts (1980 master class with Raimund Girke ), as well as art history , religious history and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . She received scholarships from the Senate of Berlin, the State of Lower Saxony, the DAAD and prizes from the Ilse Augustin Foundation , Berlin, the Federal Garden Show in Berlin and the Baer Art Center, Iceland. Exhibitions, prizes, residencies and grants have taken her to Toronto, New York, Paris, Korea and Iceland. After teaching assignments and visiting professorships in Berlin, Lüneburg, Kiel, Braunschweig and Dresden, she was appointed professor at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in Halle in 1994 . She taught at the Faculty of Art until 2018 and was a professor for art and art education (art education / art education / visual basics / visual arts). Ulf Aminde , Kathrin Ganser, Irmela Gertsen, Georg Lisek, Julian Plodek, Luise von Rohden, Juliane Schickedanz, Jochen Schneider and Ella Ziegler u. a. studied with Una H. Moehrke. In addition to her apprenticeship, Moehrke pursued her own, mostly painting and drawing work. Una H. Moehrke is a member of the International Artists' Committee and an extraordinary member of the German Association of Artists . She lives in Berlin.

Teaching

In teaching, Una H. Moehrke combined a socially-related art mediation with artistic interventions in museums, galleries, theaters and the world of work in an experimental and multimedia way . Her teaching is based on the experience that artistic work takes place in dialogue with biographical and art-reflective processes. Multi-level research projects were carried out in the context of symposia and catalog publications.

In the project Geometry of Work from 2008, both artistic research and reflection processes on the heterogeneity of the current concept of work and its different manifestations were presented, and artistic transfer projects were documented in specific working environments. A symposium at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst (GfZK) in Leipzig discussed the geometry of work in its sociological, art-theoretical and economic perspective.

Another, art-theoretical research project Im Modus der Gabe from 2011 focuses on models from theater, visual arts and performance in which processes of exchange, transfer and reciprocity are effective. In view of the performative development of contemporary art, the contributions examine the extent to which the concepts of the gift developed from an ethnological, philosophical and social science perspective ( Marcel Mauss , Maurice Godelier , Jacques Derrida , Bruno Latour , Paul Ricœur, etc.) prove to be sustainable in order to enhance the self-image of contemporary, reflect on artistic practice in the field of tension between the claim to autonomy and social effectiveness.

The exhibition and event series exciter - | EIGEN frequency from 2018, on the perception, communication and visibility of giving, taking and passing on, was Moehrke's last presentation as part of her teaching activities. In conjunction with the work of the professor, a total of 27 different positions on the phenomenon of the gift and the principle of impulse and resonance were presented in the Burg Galerie Halle.

Una H. Moehrke's artistic oeuvre includes paintings, drawings, performances and experimental texts, which are also presented as lecture performances and put together with phonetic aspects, purely random text fragments and quotations. The context for the work is a philosophical pictorial thinking that creates space without figuration and asks universal questions ( lyrical abstraction , informal art ).

Based on the photographic and performative self-portrait on the water mirror (1980s), the artist developed abstract heads in oil painting (late 1990s) in continuation of the auto -portrait . From the original head and mirror image 'icon' she extrapolated abstract surfaces, which are largely monochrome images . Moehrke pursues the reduction of lines and colored areas. In painting, in the dematerialization of color, changing color surfaces are created which, like mirrors, offer reflection surfaces for light and shadow and change with changing viewing positions. They are images that fluctuate between appearance and disappearance. The viewer perceives them as a trace of movement. With extremely subdued colors, they open up rooms whose atmosphere is reminiscent of light phenomena. Movement within the image can be associated, which corresponds to the physical movement outside the image. ("BildRaumBewendung", 2010). The white-looking pictures, which have been painted with metal pigments since 2012 , are her main works, a continued reduction of monochrome.

Starting with the performative water drawings of the 1990s, Moehrke designed a large-format, experimental form of drawing that can be assigned to site specific art and that is in dialogue with nature and architectural environments, such as industrial architecture, sacred buildings or parks. According to Moehrke, drawings can capture something incomprehensible. In them the lines condense into emblems and in some work complexes also refer to examples from art history. In 2015, the drawings in Venice were transferred fragmentarily from historical paintings into a free and contemporary line language. The transfer of tradition into actuality is accomplished with small, linear interventions ( Personal Structures. Crossing Borders: These lines are dedicated to ... Palazzo Bembo, 56th International Art Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia, Venice 2015). Moehrke's artistic development takes place dialogically in the media of performance, photography, painting, drawing and text work.
