The 1988/89 season was the 52nd season of the Hungarian Ice Hockey League , the highest Hungarian ice hockey league . Ferencvárosi TC became champion for the 19th time in the club's history .

In the main round, each of the seven teams played a total of twelve games. The four best-placed teams qualified for the final round, the top two of which qualified for the championship finals. The remaining three teams contested a placement round. The main round results were carried over to the second phase of the season. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
