The Taras Shevchenko National University of Luhansk , "LNU" ( Ukrainian Луганський національний університет імені Тараса Шевченка ) in the Ukrainian city ​​of Luhansk is the oldest university in the Donbasian city ​​of Luhansk . Operations are currently being maintained from Starobilsk , as Luhansk is occupied by pro-Russian rebels in the course of the war in Ukraine .

history

The university was founded as a teacher training institution of Ukraine in 1921. In 1939 the university was named after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko , and in 1998 it was accredited as a full university. In 2003 it became a national university and was the first Ukrainian university to implement the Bologna Process .

Use as a prison

In 2016, those affected reported that they had been locked in an illegal prison on university campus by separatist fighters . One victim said she was detained in the Mechanical Engineering Institute of Luhansk University and tortured there. Alleged opponents of the separatists were held here and tortured for several months.
