action

After the accidental death of his first wife, the Berlin heart surgeon Dr. Martin Winter and his three daughters Marie, Elisabeth and Paula went to the Irish village of Ballymara to visit in-laws Peter and Anne O'Mally on their sheep farm. The family is trying hard to overcome the loss of the mother and also hopes that the asthma sufferer, their youngest daughter Paula, will be relieved of her illness. When the local country doctor Dr. Lucius McNamara suffers a stroke, Martin takes his place. With courageous rescue missions, he gradually wins the trust of the residents and a little later receives the offer to run the practice permanently. After initial skepticism and exhausting family discussions, he decides to end his career in Germany and to emigrate to Ireland. The turning away from city life is facilitated not least by the growing affection for the sheep farmer Erin O'Toole, who leased the farm from her in-laws. His eldest daughter Marie, however, feels misunderstood by her father and returns to Berlin.

After the first few months in her new home, Martin Erin proposes marriage, which she accepts, although she is still formally married to the war reporter Christoph Lanik, who has been living abroad for years. His sudden return to Ballymara, professional difficulties as a result of a misdiagnosis by McNamara, who has returned to the practice, as well as ongoing conflicts with his two daughters troubled everyone involved. Finally, the wedding takes place on Abbey Island , the island of Erin's aunt Rebecca. Marie, who dropped out of her biology degree, is also back with her family, but denies Erin any emotional closeness. In addition, Erin is at war with widowed and aggressive neighbor Jack Stratton over the rights to the pastureland.

Further strokes of fate in the family and friendly environment such as the death of Aunt Rebecca subsequently accompany Martin and Erin's everyday marriage. Expecting a child, Erin struggles to reconcile her work duties on the farm with her pregnancy. Quarrels with Martin's two older daughters are soon overshadowed by great worries about the health of the unborn child. After giving birth, Erin devotes herself to her daughter Sarah with excessive intensity. Both her stepdaughters and Martin feel set back, which puts the relationship in serious crisis.

Reviews

The Lexicon of International Films speaks of “stereotypical (television) entertainment that always embeds the same stories about heart, pain and family problems in the charming landscape of the southern Irish coast” and also describes the television film series as “shallow, problem-laden (television) food on the paths of the Pilcher and Lindström men «.

Oddsmeter.de judges the fifth episode New Life : “Whether Rosamunde Pilcher, Inga Lindström or Traumschiff , titles are interchangeable, the basic structure remains. Take a romantic storyline, combine it with dreamy backdrops, actors with experience in the soap, and spice it up with a pinch of drama. […] With a few exceptions, at least the actors cut a pretty good figure and fill their cliché-laden characters with the best possible authenticity. "

Tittelbach.tv rates the seventh episode, Tanz auf dem Vulkan, similarly : »Our farm in Ireland - that's television in the tradition of the Black Forest Clinic . Problems accumulate without any problems, only to be solved in the end just as easily. [...] Despite the life-threatening, fateful events, Hans-Jürgen Tögels film splashes along in the style of the 80s family series. […] In the script, however, one notices nothing of a sensual implementation in a dramaturgical form as it corresponds to the entertainment film standards of 2010. The only thing that holds this film together is the presence of the Irish setting. "
