Karl Bau GmbH

Karl Bau GmbH is a family-run construction company based in Innernzell in Lower Bavaria . The construction company forms the core of the Karl group of companies.

The company was founded in 1966 by Günther Karl sen. founded as a dredging trade. In 1971 the company headquarters was built in Innernzell, today's main administrative location. In the period that followed, the construction company was expanded regularly and significantly. There were also takeovers in many areas, such as B.

In addition, the hydroelectric power plants u. a. in the Bavarian forest , in Augsburg, at the Kriebstein dam (also owned by the Karl Group), in Gumpenried , Wolfsheck , Baienfurt and Albbruck . The hydropower plants are operated by subsidiaries and the electricity generated is fed into the public grid.

A process was developed and patented for the Leaning Tower of Pisa in 1990 that was supposed to save the tower from collapsing. However, the procedure was not used. A patent has also been filed for a method for demolishing large silos.

The company is in the second generation of family ownership. Over time, the founding company was expanded to include the following companies from the Karl group in order to separate the individual activities in a meaningful way.

  • Energy : The group of companies owns seven hydropower plants in Germany, which generate around 60 million kW hours per year and thus electricity for around 50,000 people. The company entered the energy sector in 1983 with the acquisition of the first hydropower plant in the Bavarian Forest.

Controversy

Demolitions

Among other things, the Karl group of companies ensured that various structures were demolished quickly and spectacularly, including the demolition of the Nibelungenhalle in Passau in 2004 and the demolition of the Max Bridge in Deggendorf in 2000 (contrary to what had been agreed, Günther Karl let the bridge fall into the Danube) .

Daglfing trotting track

In 2005, the Karl group of companies spectacularly acquired the Daglfing trotting track (20  ha ) in Munich . In return, she committed herself to building a new equestrian facility in Maisach . This should be done on an area of 64 ha.

In 2016, after years of legal dispute, the construction company and the trotting club agreed that the trotters could use the track in Daglfing until at least 2022, but probably until 2025. The association receives 3.8 million euros from the construction company and is discharged by the construction company. At the same time, the construction company now only undertakes to build a 1000-meter-long track, whereas the trotting club would have to provide the property.

Deggendorf ice rink

In 2013 the population in Deggendorf and the surrounding area controversially discussed the award of the renovation of the Deggendorf ice rink on the basis of leasehold; In this award, the offer from the Karl group was the only offer available to the Deggendorf city council. The city rented the ice rink back for 5 percent of the investment sum raised by the Karl group of companies annually and was given the right to buy back the arena from the group for the purchase price of the investment sum raised after 30 years at the current value.

In March 2016, the city of Deggendorf announced that it would buy back the ice rink for an estimated 8.4 million euros. However, with a federal grant of 2 million euros, the actual costs for the city would only be 6.4 million euros.

"Karl Tower" Deggendorf

In the city of Deggendorf, in which the Karl corporate group owns several shopping centers and the newly built ice rink in addition to a number of residential buildings and some student residences, the corporate group is currently planning the redevelopment of a district between the old town, the Danube and the technical university . The majority of the land is owned by the group of companies. However, the planned new administration high -rise (" Karl Tower ") with a height of 36 m on the edge of the historic old town was discussed controversially in the region ; this skyscraper would stand out prominently from the silhouette of the city. As of December 3, 2014, three city councilors of the Free Voters began collecting signatures for a referendum to limit the height of the high-rise building to 22 m. On January 13, 2014, the initiative was able to hand over far more than the required 1,800 signatures in Deggendorf town hall. The referendum took place on March 22, 2015. The council request opposed to the referendum reached 68%, the referendum 51%. The key question was decided with 60% in favor of the council request. However, both requests could not achieve the necessary quorum of 20% (city council: 19%, citizens: 12%; with a voter turnout of 32%) and were therefore not binding. The referendum failed, the city council resolution stipulating a height of 36 m for the planned building remained valid.

Awards

On November 20, 2010 Günther Karl sen. appointed honorary senator of the TH Deggendorf .
