Urbain Somé (born February 20, 1979 in Upper Volta ) is a former Burkinabe soccer player on the position of midfielder , who now appears primarily as a soccer coach in the youth field.

Club career

Burkinabe champion and Champions League participant

Urbain Somé was born on February 20, 1979 in the Republic of Upper Volta. From at least 1997 he belonged to the men's team of the USFA Ouagadougou and took part with this in the CAF Cup 1997 when he made it to the second round with the team and was defeated there against Espérance Tunis from Tunisia . In the following season, 1998, the midfielder with the USFA occupied second place in the table in Group A in the basic season and thus qualified with the team for the final round of the season. In this, the USFA also prevailed against the competition and took first place at the end of the final round with one point ahead of Étoile Filante Ouagadougou . In the final, Somé was finally able to prevail with his team against city rivals Étoile Filante and won the club's sixth championship title in the club's history. In the same season, USFA Ouagadougou also made it into the final of the Coupe du Faso , but lost to ASF Bobo-Dioulasso just 1: 2. In addition, the USFA prevailed in mid-December 1998 in the Coupe de l'AJSB , the Burkinabe Super Cup, against Étoile Filante. Because of the championship title, Somé entered the CAF Champions League in 1999 with his club the following year . The USFA won with the then 20-year-old with a tight total score of 2: 1 over AS Dragons FC de l'Ouémé from Benin in the preliminary round and rose with the USFA to the subsequent first round of the tournament. After a 2-0 win in the first leg against USM El Harrach from Algeria, the club lost 6-0 in the second leg and were eliminated from the tournament with an overall result of 6-2.

In the restructured football championship, the USFA reached third place at the end of the 1998/99 season with ten points behind the champions ASFA-Yennenga Ouagadougou . After the team had lost a game against Jeunesse Club Bobo-Dioulasso, at the bottom of the table, 1-0 this season , eleven of the club's players had their heads shaved on the orders of club president and army commander Zoumana Traore and the players were in custody for one night taken. Once again the USFA moved into the cup final this year, but could not celebrate a title win here either. With 2: 3 the team around Urbain Somé lost to the club Étoile Filante Ouagadougou, who not only won the cup and runner-up this season, but also won the Burkinabe Super Cup and two other Burkinabe cup competitions. In the following year, the USFA was allowed to take part in the CAF Cup 2000 due to their participation in the finals in the Burkinabe Cup , but lost in the first round with an overall result of 2: 3 against the Club Athlétique Bizertin from Tunisia.

In the 2000 game year, most of the Ouagadougouer clubs were involved in the title race until the end; together with Étoile Filante and ASFA-Yennenga, the USFA had reached 46 points in the final ranking. Due to a goal difference two goals better than Étoile Filante and one better than ASFA-Yennenga by three goals, Urbain Somé was finally able to secure the renewed championship title in the highest Burkinabe soccer league with his team. In the Burkinabe soccer cup of that year, he did not get past the quarter-finals with his club, but was able to prevail 3-1 in the Super Cup against the cup winner Étoile Filante. Furthermore, the 1.78 m tall midfielder won the Coupe des Leaders , another Burkinabe cup competition, with his team this year . The 2001 CAF Champions League , for which Somé and his club had qualified due to the championship title, ran for the USFA similar to the two years before. After advancing in the preliminary round against AS Mangasport from Gabon, the army sports club was defeated in the following first round by the internationally successful Moroccan club Raja Casablanca with a 3: 3 total score only due to the away goal rule .

The game year 2001 ended the now 22-year-old Somé with the Union Sportive des Forces Armées in third place in the table. Even in the Coupe des Leaders, the game of which was to be discontinued a year later, the club only took third place. After Somé only finished third in the Burkinabe soccer cup in 2001, the midfielder moved abroad.

Move to Canada

Under the German Klaus Linnenbrügger , who emigrated to Canada in 1971 and had just taken over as coach himself, Somé came to the Ottawa Wizards , who played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL). Here he was one of several African players, including his compatriot Sa Brahima Traore and Peter Mponda from Malawi . In the football franchise founded just a year earlier, which occupied first place in the regular season in 2001 and was defeated in the semi-finals in the play-offs at the end of the season, Somé started playing regularly from the 2002 season . In the league, which is now divided into two parallel conferences, the midfielder and his team ranked superior to first place in the Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season and this year, after a 1-0 win over the Metro Lions, they were in the play-offs - Semi-finals, move into the final game of the season. In the 2-0 win over the North York Astros he was used by Linnenbrügger from the start and for the full duration of the game in the right midfield. As the reigning Open Canada Cup winner, the Ottawa Wizards made it into the final in 2002 and defeated Toronto Croatia 2-0, making Somé the double winner this year ; If you count first place in the regular season as your own success, the Burkinabe even managed a triple .

In the game year 2003 Somé started under the new coach Hubert Busby Jr. , who replaced Linnenbrügger as coach. Even under the new coach, the team around the Burkinabe midfielder was bursting with dominance and at the end of regular time ranked first in the table for the third time in a row. 13 wins and five draws from 18 league games as well as a goal difference of 53:10 were clearly enough for first place in the Eastern Conference . Due to disputes between the league management and the Ottawa Wizards - among other things, the team was eliminated from the field of participants in the Open Canada Cup in the summer and had no opportunity to defend its title - the Wizards, although their dominance, did not take part in the season-closing play-offs of the game year 2003. The dispute over the cup disputes subsequently ended up before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice , which ruled in favor of the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The Wizards ended the season after Busby had clashed with the club's management, under the new old coach Klaus Linnenbrügger. In protest against the previous league decisions, the franchise did not take part in the aforementioned play-offs because the Ottawa Wizards management did not agree to the competition rules. Although two Wizards players received individual awards at the end of the season, the league management announced in early December 2003 that the Ottawa Wizards and another franchise, the Durham Flames , were leaving the game, which was tantamount to dissolving the franchise.

Time at Toronto Lynx and beginning of the coaching career

After a year without any notable commitment, Somé moved to Toronto Lynx in 2005 to play in the second-rate USL First Division . His former coach and teammate Hubert Busby Jr. had meanwhile become the coach of the USL franchise and signed Somé due to a player shortage due to injury-related and disciplinary failures. The 1.78 m tall Burkinabe made his USL-1 debut on May 15, 2005 in the first game of the season against Montreal Impact , when he came on the pitch for Niels Dekker in the 55th minute and acted extremely aggressively until the end of the game. His second championship game for Toronto Lynx he completed on May 31, 2005, when Busby used him from the start and over the full game in a 3-5 home defeat against the Rochester Raging Rinos . In the game, Somé scored a dust goal in the 82nd minute to make it 3: 5. Over the remainder of the game year, the Burkiner was then no longer used and ended the year with Toronto Lynx knocked off in last place in the First Division. The following year, 2006, Somé moved back to Canadian amateur football when he joined Ottawa St. Anthony Italia . In the same year he celebrated the most successful game year in the club's history with the club when he won the Ontario Cup , the Open Canada Cup and the Canadian National Challenge Cup with the team .

Somé then no longer appeared in a well-known football team and spent his further career in Canadian amateur football before he largely withdrew from active sport and pursued a career as a football coach, especially in the youth field. Today (as of 2019), the native of Burkina , who has a Provincial B license from the Ontario Football Association , is the president and youth coach of the Planet Soccer Academy in Ottawa. He is also registered as a winter trainer at the nearby Nepean Hotspurs junior club and also trains various other youth teams.
