It began in Houston, Texas, in 2005 when knitters began embellishing doorknobs with knitted accessories instead of knitting socks , gloves, or sweaters . Further development

Anti-nuclear knitting in Berlin-Charlottenburg

In Frankfurt , the first guerrilla knitting work appeared in 2010 in appearance, in Bochum in 2011. In Klausenerplatz -Kiez in Berlin-Charlottenburg was found in the summer of 2010, the first Knittings. Since the beginning of 2011, two female students in Munich have been distributing guerrilla knitting in the city under the name Die Rausfrauen and see this as a “very feminine form of street art”.

Knittings are also used as a form of political expression. In 2010, Knittings by project opponents appeared on the building fence of the main train station in Stuttgart since the north wing was demolished (Project Stuttgart 21 ).

On March 19, 2011 in Vienna as part of a demonstration for International Women's Day, the Ringstrasse was provided with numerous guerrilla knitting. Despite a permit and financial support from the city, the works of art were removed by the street cleaning company and destroyed immediately after the demonstration.

In early March 2013, the city of Münster granted permission to attach knitting or crocheting for eight weeks to the poles, traffic lights, lanterns and signs on Warendorfer Strasse as part of the non-political action "Hand drauf!", Which is based on guerrilla gardening .

For the winter of 2013/14, a large number of public objects were knitted into Arosa as part of a privately organized knitting graffiti campaign, including a Hörnli Express gondola and the bell of the former English Church .

In autumn 2019, the most striking skyscrapers in the city were depicted on the sandstone pillars that mark the historic coronation path in Frankfurt's "new old town" with crocheting over a length of 13 m, the connecting balustrade through a detailed street with a woolly lane, traffic signs and various vehicles are supplemented. For this project, over a dozen predominantly female activists crocheted, knitted and sewed 35 kg of wool in over a year. The airy total work of art is spanned by a row of clouds and a laughing sun with a wink.
