Ursula Sutter (married Nezhoda ; born March 26, 1938 in Bern ) is a Swiss - German opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ) and chamber singer from Baden-Württemberg .

Live and act

Ursula Sutter was born as the second child of the master precision mechanic Ernst Sutter and his wife Johanna, née Herren, in Bern's Länggass district. From childhood she showed great interest in classical music, especially singing. After elementary school and middle school, she switched to business school and completed her commercial training with preference. She began her singing studies at the age of 16 and completed it between 1955 and 1961 with the director of the music high school Fred Müller in Bern. During her vocal training, Sutter worked as a clothes and hairdresser mannequin .

repertoire

Her first engagement took Sutter to the Städtebundtheater Biel-Solothurn , where she took part in three Mozart operas in her first year on stage : as “Cherubino” in Figaro's wedding , as “Donna Giacinta” in La finta semplice and as “Cavaliere Ramiro” in gardener Love «. »La finata semplice was recorded by Swiss television (SF) and broadcast on TV. Between 1961 and 1963 Sutter sang over 160 performances in 12 different roles. Then she was appointed to the Trier City Theater , where she expanded her repertoire with 6 leading roles between 1963 and 1964.

After her marriage to the buffo baritone Günther Wolfram Nezhoda and the birth of her first daughter, she moved to the Essen Opera House , where between 1964 and 1966 she played "Rosina" in Il barbiere di Siviglia ( Gioachino Rossini ) and "Magdalene" in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ( Richard Wagner ) sang.

After the birth of her second daughter, Sutter was signed to the Stuttgart State Opera , where she stayed in the ensemble for 20 years. The " Wesendonck-Lieder " (Richard Wagner), interpreted by her and accompanied by dancing by the Stuttgart Ballet, attracted particular attention . Her performances as “Hansel” in Hansel and Gretel ( Engelbert Humperdinck ), as “composer” in Ariadne auf Naxos ( Richard Strauss ) and as “Cherubino” in Figaro's wedding ”(Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) are considered legendary . She sang with Mario del Monaco in Otello , with René Kollo in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , with Siegfried Jerusalem Sutter interpreted the song cycle Das Lied von der Erde ( Gustav Mahler ) and with Placido Domingo she sang in Manon Lescaut ( Giacomo Puccini ). The motto came from Boleslaw Barlog : "If you want to book mezzo butter, you have to look for the beautiful Sutter."

Sutter sang her last official role at the Stuttgart State Opera as "Frau Reich" from the Lustige Frauen von Windsor ( Otto Nicolai ). Shortly after her retirement, Sutter unofficially jumped in as a “boy” from Giacomo Puccini's Tosca , the role with which she had started her operatic career 30 years earlier, because a colleague was ill .

Ursula Sutter was invited as an interpreter of orchestral songs, concert performances and as a lieder singer. The guest performances have taken her to the State Operas of Vienna , Munich and Hamburg , to the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf / Duisburg as well as to the opera houses in Cologne , Nuremberg , Bonn and Saarbrücken .

Foreign opera houses also invited her to guest performances, including the Bucharest National Opera , where Sutter took part in the Elektra (Richard Strauss) staged by Karlheinz Böhm , or the Teatro San Carlos Lisbon, where she appeared in the Bloody Wedding ( Wolfgang Fortner ), as well the opera of Monte Carlo , where, under the baton of Lovro von Matačić the Salome (Richard Strauss) was performed.

Sutter sang the opening song of the Myrtles ( Robert Schumann ) in the TV feature film An Unworthy Existence , produced by the Süddeutscher Rundfunk Stuttgart in 1970 .
