Uwe Schulten-Baumer (Senior)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uwe Schulten-Baumer (born January 14, 1926 in Kettwig ; † October 28, 2014 in Rheinberg ), nicknamed "The Doctor", was a German show jumping and dressage rider who gained international fame as a dressage trainer. He was awarded the Riding Master Award.

Career and student

As the son of a farmer, he took an early interest in horses. There was a riding school across from his school, where he helped with the horse care . He later learned to ride here. He did his military service in the Navy. Here he rode the commandant's horses on Saturdays.

After the Second World War, he took part in the show jumping competitions of the CHIO Aachen with Senta in 1952 . He later acquired the gelding Glücksspiel from Fritz Tempelmann , with which he fully concentrated on dressage riding. In addition, he trained other riders.

He was a trained businessman, made up his Abitur, studied economics and received his doctorate with the thesis "Course of the cost curve of the cement industry". Since he was heavily involved full-time as a steel manager and board member of the pig iron association, he decided to end his active sports career and concentrated entirely on training dressage riders.

His first successful students included his son of the same name and his daughter Alexa , both from their first marriage. Margit Otto-Crépin and Pia Laus followed as his students.

Another student followed in 1986 was Nicole Uphoff . A year later she won a Grand Prix Spécial for the first time together with Rembrandt in Lausanne . In the years that followed, training with Schulten-Baumer resulted in various national and international titles for Uphoff.

His next successful student was Isabell Werth . She came from the neighborhood and was friends with another daughter of Schulten-Baumer. At the age of 17 on New Year's Eve 1986, Schulten-Baumer offered Werth the offer to ride his horses. This resulted in a sporting partnership, which also resulted in various titles. Werth left the Schulten-Baumer farm in consultation at the end of 2001, after both had needed some distance from each other and there had also been differences with Ellen Schulten-Baumer .

Ellen, Schulten-Baumer's stepdaughter from his second marriage, was also a student of Uwe Schulten-Baumer. She took part in the 2007 and 2009 European Championships . Isabell Werth's horses were all owned by Schulten-Baumer until 2001, Gigolo FRH remained so until his death. Uwe Schulten-Baumer was also the owner of Ellen Schulten-Baumer's competition horses.

Awards

The Rhineland Equestrian Association (PSVR) awarded Schulten-Baumer the Association's Great Medal in 1973. In 1981 he received the silver plaque for special merits from the German Equestrian Association (FN) . In 1988, the St. Georgs plaque of the PSVR followed. In 1992 and 1997 he was recognized as the world's best trainer by the International Dressage Trainers Club.

During the CHIO Aachen 2005 he was presented with the “Silver Horse” for his life's work. In the same year, on August 28, 2005, he was awarded the title of riding master by the FN. In 2007 he received the PSI Award for the mediation and selection of highly talented young horses for dressage and show jumping. In 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon , also at the CHIO Aachen .

In addition, as a trainer and owner, he was awarded the Otto Lörke Prize eight times by the DOKR for the best dressage horse at most ten years old between 1985 and 2000 . Schulten-Baumer was an honorary member of the Rhineland Equestrian Association.

criticism

Schulten-Baumer is sometimes named as the inventor of the Rollkur in connection with Rembrandt's training . In an interview with Sjef Janssen (the Dutch national trainer dressage and spouse of Anky van Grunsven ), who is regularly mentioned as an example of the roll cure / hyperflexion, he stated that his system was totally different from Schulten-Baumer's system. Klaus Balkenhol commented on the subject of using the "Rollkur" in Germany in an interview: There were also horses in Germany that were hired low, for example those from the training of a Dr. Schulten-Baumer, but the focus was always on stretching and relaxing. But what Sjef Janssen has been doing in recent years has been different.
