history
With the mobilization on August 2, 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War , the corps was set up. The commanding general was General of the Infantry von Gündell , the Chief of Staff was Lieutenant Colonel von Stockhausen. The assigned 9th Reserve Division was under Lieutenant General von Guretzky-Cornitz , the 10th Reserve Division was under Lieutenant General von Wartenberg .
In association with the 5th Army , the corps marched through neutral Luxembourg to France . The association remained exclusively on the Western Front during the further course of the war .
The corps fought in the Battle of Longwy on August 22nd - the 10th Reserve Division fought for the town of Ville de Montois and reached the Crusnes River at Pierrepont. The 9th Reserve Division, in conjunction with the 34th Division, forced the march through Fillieres and pursued the enemy on Joppecourt. After further battles the Corps was on the east bank of the Maas on the Wöevre level in trench warfare against Verdun .
At the end of February 1916, the corps went on the attack in the Battle of Verdun . During the fighting for the village and Fort Vaux , his large association suffered heavy losses and finally had to be pulled from the front in mid-June. It was then moved to Champagne for rest and refreshment .
In early October 1916, the 9th and 10th Reserve Divisions were thrown into the Battle of the Somme . The 5th Reserve Corps (Group Section D) under General von Garnier established itself on the northern bank of the Somme opposite the French 6th Army on the Rancourt- Bouchavesnes line . The 113th division in the front and the 211th division as reserve were also subordinate to the command . Almost all of the units were relieved by October 18, and then the 103rd and 211th Divisions and the 8th replacement division brought up from the Moselle front were subordinated to the Garnier Corps on the same sector .
Between November 22, 1917 and June 1, 1918, the corps command took over the command of a section on the Lorraine Moselle front as " Gruppe Ornes ". On June 12, 1918, the V Reserve Corps took over the section "Maasgruppe Ost", which had to be evacuated at the beginning of November as a result of the Meuse-Argonne offensive .
