Velká niva (in German: Great Moor ) is a national nature reserve (No. 1149), which is about five kilometers west of the Czech town of Volary (German: Wallern ) in the South Bohemian district of Prachatitz . It belongs to the wetlands of the Upper Vltava , a complex of western Palearctic wetlands of international importance. The administration is in charge of the Šumava Biosphere Reserve .

The Velká niva nature reserve is a very large alluvial peat bog with natural peat spruce forest and bog pine stands. There are rare and endangered animal and plant species, such as the bog mountain pine Pinus mugo rotundata . The Šumava Biosphere Reserve exercises species protection and the conservation of natural habitats in accordance with the EU Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive .

Geographical location

The 120 hectare protected area is located east of the village of Lenora (German: Eleonorenhain) at an altitude of 748 to 775 meters above sea level and is bordered by the road I / 39 from Volnary to Lenora and further towards Milešice (German: Oberschlag) . The Olšinka brook , a left tributary of the Warm Vltava , flows through it. The Malá niva nature reserve (in German roughly: small moor ) connects to the southwest .

Categorized as IUCN Ia , Velká niva is a Strict Nature Reserve , which is reserved solely for research and the protection of large, unaffected areas as well as the conservation of biodiversity and environmental observation. As a rule, entering the area is only permitted in the context of scientific field work.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve consists mainly of a forest of the rare bog mountain pine Pinus mugo rotundata , interspersed with silver birch trees ( Betula pendula ). It is surrounded by a continental mountain pine bog forest , in which bog birch ( Betula pubescens ) and Norway spruce ( Picea abies ) also occur. The forest is lined with peat trees.

In the herb layer are, among others, long-leaf chickweed ( Stellaria longifolia ), spotted orchid ( Dactylorhiza fuchsii ) Small two-sheet ( Listera cordata ), rosemary ( Andromeda polifolia ), Austrian Gämswurz ( Doronicum austriacum ) Sundew ( Drosera rotundifolia ), Forest -Soldanelle ( Soldanella montana ), reed ( Phragmites australis ), ordinary cranberry ( Vaccinium oxycoccos ), sphagnum fallax ( sphagnum fallax ), Medium peat moss ( sphagnum magellanicum ) Gewelltblättriges fork tooth moss ( Dicranum polysetum ) and Lycopodium annotinum ( Lycopodium annotinum ) before.

Many of the arthropods found there are typical of peat bogs, such as B. sphagnum Wolf spider ( Pardosa sphagnicola ) acronicta menyanthidis ( Acronicta menyanthidis ), Nordic Rauschbeerwickler ( Epinotia gimmerthaliana ) arichanna melanaria ( Arichanna melanaria ), the leaf beetle Luperus viridipennis , the flea beetle Longitarsus suturellus and Minota obesa , hollow tooth flea beetle ( Neocrepidodera femorata ), Small willow weevil ( Temnocerus nanus ), red-footed rag weevil ( Otiorhynchus fuscipes ), common marsh meadow weevil ( Notaris acridulus ) and small stone pine beetle ( Pityogenes conjunctus ).
