The Verden dunes , officially "NSG dune area near Neumühlen ", are inland dunes and a nature reserve in the northeastern part of the city of Verden (Aller) on the Aller in Lower Saxony . The dunes are part of a pronounced dune strip on the edge of the Aller- Urstromtal and the Achim-Verdener Geest .

Since this form of the shifting dune in the interior was mostly destroyed by vegetation and sand degradation after the formation in the Ice Age , they are very rarely found. The dunes near Verden formed around 15,000 years ago and are only populated by individual pines and grasslands. Only the edge of the dune is - after reforestation of the former heathland surrounding the nature reserve - lined with a strip of forest and bushes.

View of the Verden dunes

The Verden dunes were declared a nature reserve as early as 1930 at the suggestion of Reinhold Tüxen and are the oldest nature reserve in the Verden district . In the "Ordinance on the nature reserve" Dune area near Neumühlen "near Verden an der Aller" of April 24, 1930, the size is given as 15.6 hectares. The first efforts to protect this area began in the mid-1920s. It was feared that sand mining and afforestation could lead to the disappearance of the dune landscape. In an expert report drawn up in 1928, Tüxen emphasized the supraregional importance of the dune area, which was then still migrating. Different stages of succession can be observed to this day; In addition to sand drifts and larger areas free of vegetation, there are silver grass corridors, sand sedge stands and pioneer forest stadiums.

In May 1992, the body of a 13-year-old boy who had been kidnapped by the so-called mask man in Scheeßel was found in the Verden dunes .
