Although the fast striker had several offers from Europe at the same time, he signed a contract with the Mexican club, not least because he admired the Paraguayan striker José Saturnino Cardozo and wanted to play in his team.

Sánchez made his first game for Toluca on July 20, 2001, when he scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Club León . Cardozo and Sanchez later developed into the most dangerous storm duo in Mexican football. Both played a key role in Toluca's 2002 championship. Three years later, Toluca was again in the final for the national title. In two games, the team of CF Monterrey were beaten 6: 3 overall; of the six goals his team scored, Sánchez contributed three. In 2007 he was voted the best offensive man and most valuable player in Mexico. He also made a name for himself several times on the international stage; so he got four goals in the course of the Copa Libertadores 2007 , including one to his team's 2-0 victory over Boca Juniors .

For Deportivo Toluca, he completed a total of 200 top division games from Torneo Invierno 2001 to Apertura 2007 and scored 71 goals.

According to ex-coach Mirko Slomka , Sánchez can play both as a winger in a 4-3-3 system and as one of two peaks. Manager Andreas Müller described him as an “absolute dream candidate for the attack”.

After short appearances against VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund , he scored his first Bundesliga goal for Schalke in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg three minutes after being substituted on in the 65th minute. Sanchez scored his first goal for Schalke in an international match in the 4-1 win over APOEL Nicosia in the 2008/2009 UEFA Cup .
