Vinni Lettieri (born February 6, 1995 in Excelsior , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player of Italian origin who has been under contract with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League since March 2017 and also for their farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack , in the American Hockey League is used.

Career

Vinni Lettieri attended Minnetonka High School in his youth and played for their ice hockey team in a regional high school league. In the middle of the 2011/12 season he moved to the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest-ranking junior league in the United States, and established himself there the following year with 28 goals and assists as a regular scorer, so that he was in the USHL All -Rookie team was chosen. In addition, the attacker played two games for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and took part with the US U18 national team in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2012 , but subsequently did not earn a permanent place in the squad. The American then enrolled at the University of Minnesota for the 2013/14 season and was henceforth active for their team, the Golden Gophers , in the Big Ten Conference , a league played by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

With the Golden Gophers , Lettieri won the title of best team of the regular season in each of the following four years, while in 2014/15 he also won the playoffs for the championship of the Big Ten Conference. He achieved his best personal statistic in the 2016/17 season with 37 scorer points from 38 games, while he was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for his fairness and exemplary sporting behavior . He then signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL) as a free agent in March 2017 , without having previously been considered in an NHL Entry Draft . The Rangers used the striker until the end of the season with their farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack , in the American Hockey League (AHL), where Lettieri also spent most of the 2017/18 season and impressed there as a regular scorer. At the same time, he made his debut for the Rangers in the NHL in December 2017, made 19 appearances by the end of the season and temporarily established himself in their NHL line-up at the start of the 2018/19 season. In contrast, he was only on the ice in the AHL in the following season.

Personal

His grandfather Lou Nanne was a player, coach and general manager of the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL and is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame . His father, Tino Lettieri , who was born in Bari in southern Italy , was active as a professional football goalkeeper , represented the Canadian national team at several international tournaments and was elected to the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame in 2001.
