The Virú district is located in the Virú province in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . It has an area of ​​1077.15 km². The 2017 census counted 52,407 inhabitants. Ten years earlier the population was 47,652. The district was established on December 28, 1961. The administrative seat is the provincial capital Virú .

Geographical location

The Virú district extends over the north of the Virú province, from the Pacific coast over the arid coastal plain of Peru to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district has a 40 km long coastline and extends up to 42 km inland. The lower catchment area of the Río Virú lies in the district. The district extends in the south to the mouth of the Río Chao . Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the Río Virú. Otherwise there is desert vegetation. In the north, the district is bordered by the districts of Salaverry and Laredo (both in the province of Trujillo ), in the east by the districts of Carabamba and Huaso (both in the province of Julcán ) and in the south by the district of Chao .
