The Viraco district is located in the Castilla province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​137 km². The 2017 census counted 1660 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2519, in 2007 it was 2010. The district administration is located in the 3215  m high village of Viraco with 1171 inhabitants (as of 2017). Viraco is 46 km north of the provincial capital Aplao .

Geographical location

The Viraco district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the west of the province of Castilla. In the far north rises the mountain range of the 6425  m high volcano Nevado Coropuna . The area is drained south to the Río Colca .

The district of Viraco borders in the southwest and in the west on the district Pampacolca , in the north on the district Salamanca ( province Condesuyos ), in the east on the district Machaguay and in the extreme south on the district Tipán .
