Life

Michels spent his high school at the Schloss Salem School , graduated from high school and then studied medicine and psychology in Freiburg and Mainz . In 1969 Siegfried Unseld , the publisher of Suhrkamp and Insel Verlag in Frankfurt am Main, hired him as a lecturer for German literature. By 2008 Michels had published more than a hundred thematic editions, including the posthumous writings and letters of Hermann Hesse. For the first time he summarized thousands of his culturally critical and political articles published in newspapers and magazines. In 2007 Michels completed the first complete Hesse edition (21 volumes, around 15,000 pages). He manages the artistic estate of the poet, which consists of more than 3000 watercolors.

As editor, Michels oversaw editions of works by Ernst Weiss , Friedrich Michael , Martin Beheim-Schwarzbach and Ernst Penzoldt . He initiated the collected works of Stefan Zweig and Manfred Hausmann published by S. Fischer Verlag . Since 2008 Michels has been working on a ten-volume edition of Hesse's letters, which are to appear as a supplement to the “Complete Works”.

He wrote numerous essays on literary and art-historical topics, which led to invitations to lecture tours through Europe, the USA, South America and Asia. Michels lives in Offenbach . There, over the years, he built up a Hermann Hesse edition archive used by researchers from all over the world. In 1990 he set up the Hesse Museum in Hesse's native town on behalf of the city of Calw and the German Literature Archive in Marbach .
