Volker Schmidt-Sondermann (born March 21, 1965 in Göttingen ) is a German film producer , director and screenwriter .

life and work

Volker Schmidt-Sondermann grew up as the third child of forest director Gottfried Schmidt and his wife Gertrud Schmidt in the Harz Mountains, the Lüneburg Heath and the Wesermarsch. After graduating from high school in Oldenburg, he completed his acting training at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich from 1988 to 1992 . First theater engagements followed in Munich, Constance and Aachen. He starred in the short film Runaway , which was nominated for the German Short Film Award in 1992. In 1993, Volker Schmidt-Sondermann switched to the other side of the camera and began working as a director at the German editorial office of Kazakh TV in Alma-Ata . From here he traveled to Siberia and the former Soviet republics of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan .

Back in Germany, Volker Schmidt-Sondermann moved with his family to Dresden in 1995 and, as a television journalist, experienced the development of public television in the new federal states. The first reports were made for MDR , and films for ZDF 37 Grad soon followed .

Through the collaboration with Tellux-Film Munich, his work also focused on religious topics. As part of the BR / ORF series Danube Monasteries , he made films about the Weltenburg Monastery and the Romanian Orthodox monasteries in the Danube Delta. Again and again he shot in the Vatican in Rome. The highlight was the ZDF three-part series Power of Miracles - The Secrets of the Vatican , which examines phenomena of Marian apparitions, miraculous healings or encounters with the devil in eight countries.

From 2003, Volker Schmidt-Sondermann was also part of the directing team for fictional series. The German class told in 13 parts the difficult start of foreigners in Germany and received an award at the Grimme Prize 2004. The cross with the writing dealt with the life of illiterate people in Germany and is realized in the Schalke Arena . From 2006 his cinematic work focused on great musicians for ARD. This is how the film Paganini's secret about the legendary devil's violinist came about . Puccini - Magician of Passion told the story of the last great Italian opera composer. In 2009 the film Robert Schumann's Lost Dreams followed . From 2007, the English royal family became a further focus . Volker Schmidt-Sondermann directed ZDF documentaries about Prince William and Kate , Prince Harry , Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth . In 2008, the three-part series The Windsors - Triumph and Tragedy , a comprehensive look at the 200-year history of the fate of the House of Windsor.

Time and again, his cinematic work also took him abroad. For the ZDF four-parter Mongolia - The Caravan , he accompanied Mongolians and Germans from the Russian border to Karakorum for ten weeks .

His most successful films include two award-winning wildlife films. The journey of the storks follows the stork princess with a transmitter, 10,000 kilometers from Germany to South Africa through 20 countries. In 2016 he shot The Odyssey of the Lonely Wolves and for the first time narrated the return of European wolves to Central Europe.

Volker Schmidt-Sondermann, who continues to work as a director, joined the management of Ifage Filmproduktion Wiesbaden and Tellux-Film Dresden in 2014.

Since then he has been producing films for the public broadcasters ZDF , ARD , the third parties , KiKA and ARTE . Foreign reports on Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Kazakhstan are produced for NDR / ARTE. For the children's channel series such as paper chase or the new story format Triff ... are developed and implemented. Also the documentary films for the WDR Dügün. Weddings in Turkish or slaves are part of the cinematic repertoire. Documentaries are created for ZDF Terra X , such as The Thirty Years War , Magellan's Journey around the Earth or the three-part series The Big Beginning. 500 years of the Reformation , which was awarded the German Television Prize in 2018 .

Volker Schmidt-Sondermann is married to Susanne Sondermann. They have three children together, now also two grandchildren, and they live in Dresden .
