history

The foundation

Volksbank eG Gera Jena Rudolstadt is the legal successor to the advance payment association Rudolstadt, which was founded on March 16, 1857 by nine members. As a result, the craftsmen, small businesses, farmers and small savers of the time created the opportunity to build up reserves and take out loans regardless of excessive interest demands from private moneylenders. Just a week after it was founded, it was decided to no longer call itself an association, but a society.

Name changes (1857-1891)

On September 15, 1869, the company was renamed "Advance Association in Rudolstadt registered company" and entered the cooperative register. The next renaming took place in 1889 as "Advance Association in Rudolstadt registered cooperative with unlimited liability" . However, just two years later, unlimited liability was changed to limited liability, and the number of members exceeded the 1000 mark for the first time.

The first branches (1920–1927)

On September 2, 1920, the first branch in Oberweißbach was opened, and the name was changed from “Verein” to “Bank” so that from that point on it was called “Gewerbe- und Handelsbank eGmbH” . Growing customer numbers in the following years made it possible to open a second branch in Sitzendorf on November 12, 1927 . In Mellenbach , the Mellenbach advance club was also taken over. The industrial and commercial bank Rudolstadt was able to call another branch its own.

Reconstruction, expansion and modernization (1935-1940)

In 1935 the advance payment association Remda was taken over and the new branch there opened on October 15th. In 1936 another paying office went into operation in Schwarza . In order to relieve the main office, another branch was built in Rudolstadt in 1937 with a modern and theft-proof night safe in the office building. On December 11, 1939, at the second ordinary general assembly, the name was changed to “Volksbank Rudolstadt eGmbH” . This happened because of the standardization that took place throughout Germany during the Nazi era, as a result of which all credit unions had to make this name change. At the end of 1940, the renovation of the main branch was completed. This included the redesign and expansion of the rooms, the construction of a spacious counter, the creation of a public area and the installation of a ventilation system, the basic structure of which was in use until 1996.

Establishment of the zone of occupation (1945–1946)

On July 26, 1945, Volksbank Rudolstadt eGmbH, like all other banks in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ), was closed. At the beginning of October, the board of directors submitted an application to the responsible occupation authorities to reopen the bank, which was granted on October 8th. However, this only applied to the main office in Rudolstadt and not to branches, which, however, also reopened from November 12th after approval by the State Office for Finance in Weimar. The general assembly necessary for the resumption of business took place on April 25, 1946. In addition to the confirmation of the supervisory board and the management board, the new name “Bank für Handwerk und Gewerbe eGmbH in Rudolstadt” was determined on this.

Membership decline (1950–1966)

In the following years there was a decline in membership. The numbers fell annually and in 1962 were only 1,757. The reasons for this were relocation, termination or death of the respective members. In August 1961 the flow of refugees to the west was interrupted by the building of the wall ; the decline in membership nevertheless persisted. At the end of 1964 the bank still had 1,517 members. Since its peak in 1949, the bank has lost a total of 2,116 or around 58 percent of its members. At the end of 1965 this fell further to 1,384 members, thus reaching the value at the beginning of the century.

Technical innovations 1966

1966 was a year of technical innovations and rationalization. On April 1st, the savings account for cashless payments was introduced. In addition, a modern telephone system was installed for the German Central Bank for 15,000 marks and the Supervisory Board decided to install an alarm system in the main branch in order to increase the security standard.

Expansion of the business area (1968–1969)

In 1967 and 1968, the next steps were taken to expand the bank into a flat bank. On May 18, 1967, the banks for trade and commerce in Königsee and Rudolstadt merged . Furthermore, in the same year, preparations were made for a merger with the banks for craft and trade in Schwarzburg and Bad Blankenburg . First, in 1968, the merger with the Bank für Handwerk und Gewerbe in Schwarzburg was successfully carried out and from then on it was continued as a branch.

Introduction of electronic data processing (1968–1971)

The focus in 1968 was the preparation for the introduction of electronic data processing (EDP). This innovation was to be introduced in the Gera district in the first quarter of 1971. However, a district adjustment was necessary beforehand. For this reason, the Neuhaus District Council and the German Cooperative Association in Berlin suggested that the Mellenbach and Oberweißbach branches should be transferred to the Steinheid commercial bank . This proposal was addressed in the general assembly on April 5th and found the approval of those present, so that on September 30th 1969 these branches finally came to Steinheid.

EDP was introduced in the first half of 1971. The Rudolstadt commercial bank was the first to receive this technology in what was then the Gera district . After initial teething problems, the bank's service and efficiency were significantly improved. In addition, on April 17, 1970, the name was changed to "Cooperative Bank for Crafts and Trades Rudolstadt" .

Mergers from 1972 to 1974

From 1972 work was done to merge with other banks and thus to enlarge the business area. As a result, on April 17, 1973, the merger of the cooperative banks for handicrafts and businesses in Rudolstadt and Bad Blankenburg , which had already been sought in 1968, took place . This was confirmed by the General Assembly on May 4th. The merger with the cooperative bank for craft and trade Kahla was also approved.

On May 17 of the following year there was another name change at the general assembly. From that point on, the new name was “Cooperative Fund for Crafts and Trades of the GDR in the Rudolstadt and Jena districts” . Rudolstadt remained as the headquarters of the cooperative bank.

Reunification (1989–1990)

When the borders of the GDR were opened in 1989 , there were numerous changes in the following years. The “Cooperative Fund for Crafts and Trades of the GDR in the Rudolstadt and Jena districts” was called “Volksbank Rudolstadt-Jena eG” in the now reunited Germany . It was possible to switch to the nationwide EDP standard with online operation as early as November 2, 1990. Support was received from colleagues from the Bavarian and Hessian Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken. Volksbank Rudolstadt-Jena eG joined the Hesse / Rhineland-Palatinate Cooperative Association on January 1, 1991, like numerous Thuringian Volksbanks before. Thereupon its name changed to "Genossenschaftsverband Hessen / Rheinland-Pfalz / Thüringen eV"

Joined the BVR in 1991

In February 1991 the bank gave the responsible auditing association , the Cooperative Association Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate eV Frankfurt, the order to examine the economic situation of the bank on the basis of the DM opening balance sheet and to prepare a report on the development in the meantime and on the result of the Exam. This report was intended for submission to the Federal Association of German People's and Raiffeisen Banks (BVR) and should serve as an annex to the application for admission to the BVR protection scheme. The application was approved in a letter from the Federal Association of German People's and Raiffeisen Banks dated June 25, 1991 and the bank was accepted into the association. Being part of the BVR security system ensures 100% institute protection.
