The Volkspark am Weinberg (also Weinbergspark ) is the only Volkspark in the Berlin district of Mitte (in the district of the same name ) and has an area of around 4.3  hectares . It is bounded by Weinbergsweg in the southeast, Brunnenstrasse in the southwest, Veteranenstrasse in the northwest and Fehrbelliner Strasse in the northeast. The name of the park goes back to the former vineyards that were laid out there earlier. It has been a garden monument since the late 1970s .

history

In the area along Invalidenstrasse and Brunnenstrasse there was a Wilhelminian-era development; on Fehrbelliner Strasse up to the level of Zehdenicker Strasse , the Wollanksche Gut, von von, which was converted into a mulberry plantation and later used as a garden restaurant and entertainment venue, stretched along Weinbergsweg since the middle of the 18th century which from 1936 a part of the park belonging to the villa was leased to the city of Berlin and opened up to the public. There was also the Walhalla Theater with Carow's laughing stage . During the Second World War , from 1943 onwards, the Allied air raids on Berlin destroyed the entire development, the rubble of which was cleared away after the end of the war . Initially, a cultural park was planned here. In the years 1954–1956 the park was built according to plans by the garden architect Helmut Kruse, who envisaged a richly structured park with diverse design and usage areas, taking into account the hillside location. On the elevated plateau, the Café am Weinberg was built in 1957/1958 based on designs by Hans Jahresig and Max Kowohl, which allows wide views over the park. A kidney-shaped pond was created on Brunnenstrasse, surrounded by the central lawn for sunbathing. The park occupied a special position in the Berlin green planning of the 1950s. It is the only park of this size and in a consistently independent formal design at a time when the restoration or renewal of war-torn parks was the focus.

description

Between the remaining buildings on Invalidenstrasse and Weinbergsweg, separated by a height offset, there is a rose garden with a fountain , a playground and a sports facility with a football field and table tennis on the north side .

Other themed gardens, such as the heather garden, the exhibition and viewing garden and the Alpinum, which formerly served to experience and get to know the diversity of plants, are located along the main access routes surrounding the central lawn.

In the north-west of the park stands the Heinrich Heine monument created by Waldemar Grzimek in 1955 , which was to be erected in the chestnut grove (Unter den Linden) in 1956. However, it was installed here in this public park in 1958. The following quote from Heinrich Heine can be read on the front, lower, right-hand side of the monument : "We do not seize an idea, but the idea seizes us and enslaved us and whipped us into the arena so that we fight for it like forced gladiators."

use

The sunbathing lawn on the south-west slope is used by many residents, especially in summer. Below the lawn there is an artificially created pond , above a Swiss restaurant , the rose garden, a playground and the sports facility with soccer field, all of which are used intensively.

Although the residential area in the vicinity is one of the areas with the largest number of children in Berlin, the park has not been adequately maintained for years. Only after residents in neighborhood talks and by collecting signatures called for repairs in order to counter the establishment of a drug scene, the Senate made funds available for this garden monument. Regular checks are carried out in the park by the police station directly adjacent to the park . These, as well as the reporting in the tabloids, sparked a debate in which one spoke out against a blanket condemnation of dealers. In August 2007, the Mitte district provided funds for the repair and expansion of the lighting.

At the end of 2005 the Weinbergspark was renovated with a budget of around one million euros. In March 2019 it became known that the park would be protected from vandalism and rubbish by so-called park managers and that the barbecue ban would be monitored.

Suburban theater on Weinbergsweg

Julie Gräbert (1803–1871), better known as Mother Gräbert , headed the suburban theater here on Weinbergsweg from 1854 , which quickly became known around the city because of its "original Berlinism ". The Berliner Posse found another home here (next to the established Wallner Theater ). The “Vorstetisch” was ultimately a victim of the founding years : after Gräbert's death it was torn down in 1873, and Zehdenicker Strasse was built there instead . Julie Gräbert was buried in the nearby Elisabeth churchyard .
